Breakages on long journeys are rarely dropped items. They are things that were allowed to move for hundreds of miles. That makes packing the part of a Irish move worth paying attention to — either ours, or yours done properly.

Customs relief for moving your home to Ireland

Ireland is in the EU and the UK is not, so a household load from Great Britain is an import. Irish Revenue offers transfer of residence relief from import charges when you move to live in Ireland from outside the EU. Its rules are below.

• You have lived outside the EU for a continuous period of at least 12 months before you move to Ireland.
• You have had possession of, and used, the goods for the minimum period Revenue sets, which is six months in the standard case.
• You import the goods within six months before, or 12 months after, the date you move to live in Ireland. If they arrive first, you must establish residence within six months of the import.
• Duty and tax must have been paid on the goods in the country where they were bought.
• If you hire out, lend, sell or otherwise dispose of the goods within 12 months, you must pay the import charges.

Sending a load from Great Britain by ferry

For household goods moved from Great Britain (excluding Northern Ireland) through the ferry freight channel, Revenue requires a valid Pre-Boarding Notification (PBN) ID before you check in with the ferry company. It says to email the relevant port address two weeks in advance with your completed declaration form C&E 1076 (Rev 2), your supporting documents and a request for the PBN ID. That lead time is the main thing to build the move date around.

Revenue lists proof of residence abroad, proof of your move to Ireland, and evidence of ownership and use of the goods as the supporting documents. Keep them together with your inventory.

On the UK side

GOV.UK says goods for personal use taken out of the UK in luggage or in a vehicle do not normally need a formal declaration, and that you should also check the requirements of the country you are going to. A full household load is a bigger consignment than luggage, so tell us early that it is a removal and we will confirm with you which paperwork applies before the day.
