Customs relief for moving your home to the Netherlands
Dutch customs offers relief from import taxes on household goods when you move to the Netherlands from outside the EU. The conditions it lists are below.
- You are moving from a country outside the EU and have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months.
- You have owned and used the goods for at least 6 months, and you use them for the same purpose after the move.
- You import the goods within 12 months after moving to the Netherlands.
- You may not lend, pledge, rent out or transfer the goods within 12 months after import.
Who files the customs declaration
Dutch customs says you cannot make this declaration yourself: a moving or transport company arranges it for you through the customs declaration system. That makes the removal firm part of the customs process on a Dutch move, so tell us early that the goods are going to the Netherlands and bring the papers below to the first conversation.
- A signed inventory of all the personal goods being moved.
- Proof of your residence in the Netherlands, preferably a municipal registration certificate showing your settlement date.
- Alternatively, proof that you have deregistered in your country of origin plus one more document, such as an employment contract, work permit or rental or purchase agreement.
Not everything can be brought in
Dutch customs notes that not all items can simply be brought into the Netherlands, and that product rules apply separately. Ask about anything unusual, such as food, plants, weapons or medicines, before it is packed.
