What a move in Hackney costs

Two worked examples
A 2-bedroom home, a local move of about 6 miles. A Luton Box Van with two movers is £100 an hour. Loading and unloading takes about 3 hours and the drive between the two addresses about 15 min, so 3 hr 30 min is booked: £350. Six miles at £1.80 adds £10.80, which comes to about £360.80 before any stairs, dismantling or packing.
The same home, 200 miles out of Hackney. The drive takes about 3 hr 15 min, so 6 hr 30 min is booked (£650), and 200 miles × £1.80 adds £360: about £1,010. A long-distance move is priced from the same rate card as a local one; it just has more miles on it.

Reserving space outside the property: Hackney Council
Hackney asks you to apply at least 7 working days before the suspension starts and lists removals as an approved purpose. It charges a £100 administration fee per suspension plus £44 per space per day, and adds a £161 fee for each suspension applied for outside the 7-day window. For a moving-home suspension it discounts the bay fee for up to 3 bays on the first day.

The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all London boroughs since 29 August 2023. A van that does not meet the ULEZ emissions standard is charged for each day it is driven inside the zone, so ask whichever company you book which vehicle will be used and check it with TfL's vehicle checker. AFS vans meet the ULEZ standard, so no ULEZ charge is added to an AFS quote.

Stairs and lifts
Floors, lifts and the carry from the van
Tell us which floor each address is on and whether a lift takes furniture. Stairs are charged by the flight from the first floor up, and a working lift removes the charge. A long walk from the van, a narrow gate or a tight stairwell also changes the time a job takes.

Deciding how much help you need
Most moves need only a vehicle and a crew sized to the home. These are the situations where adding help usually saves time or reduces risk.
An extra mover
Worth it when there are stairs at both ends, a long carry from where the van can stop, or a tight window between collecting your keys and handing over your old ones.
For a Luton Box Van, a third mover takes the hourly rate from £100 to £130.
Packing
Worth it when you have less than a week, a lot of glass, china or artwork, or little time around work.
Packing packages include the materials: £400 for a 1-bedroom home, £600 for 2 bedrooms and £1,000 for 3. If you only want the breakables done, fragile-only packing covers glass, china, artwork and mirrors.
Dismantling and reassembly
Worth it when a bed, wardrobe or table will not pass through a stairwell or doorway in one piece.
A single or double bed is £50 to dismantle, or £90 to dismantle and rebuild; a standard two-door wardrobe is £60, or £110 with reassembly. Every dismantling booking has a £90 minimum.
Pianos, antiques and artwork
Worth it when an item is heavy, valuable or awkward enough to need extra wrapping and handling.
Priced for the item, after we know what it is and where it has to go.
Storage
Worth it when your new home is not ready on moving day, the dates do not line up, or you are downsizing and need somewhere for what does not fit yet.
We arrange secure storage near either address. Storage for a 1-bedroom flat's contents is £250 to £350 a month, VAT included, with the first month paid upfront; larger homes are priced on volume in your quote. Moving into and out of storage is priced like any other move.
