Other charges that can apply

  • Stairs

£10 per person, per flight, per hour

From the first floor up, for the hours at that address. A floor is 2 flights, so a first floor with a two-person crew adds £40 an hour there. A working lift that takes furniture removes the charge.

  • Waiting time

    £40 per person, per hour

For example if the keys are released late on completion day: £80 an hour for a two-person crew.

  • Timing

    +20% Sundays and bank holidays

Your quote says which applies to your date before you book.

The minimum booking is 2 hours for the Small Transit (SWB) and Transit LWB, and 3 hours for the Luton Box Van, 5.5 Tonne Lorry and 7.5 Tonne Lorry.

To get an itemised quote, send us both addresses, the floor and lift situation at each, where the van can stop, and what the job involves. Your quote arrives in writing within 24 hours.

Travel

Do you pay for our journey to Cambridge?

No. Our nearest office is in London, about 38 miles from Cambridge as the crow flies. That journey is not in your quote.

The hourly charge starts when the crew arrives at your first address, and the mileage covers only the road distance between the address you are leaving and the one you are moving to. That holds whether you are moving across Cambridge or to the other end of the country.

Man & Van by AFS Removals

The service

Man & Van with AFS

Not every job needs a lorry and four people. Man and van is the same service scaled down — our own driver, an hourly rate, a two-hour minimum, and the option to add a second pair of hands if the sofa needs it.

It suits single rooms, part-loads, student moves, a single piece of furniture, or a few items into a storage unit — anything smaller than a full house that still needs a proper vehicle and someone who knows how to load it.

Before moving day

Before moving day in Cambridge

Three things that decide how a move runs at any address. Tell us about them when you ask for a quote.

  1. 1

    Parking at both addresses

Is there somewhere a van can legally stop close to the door? If a bay needs suspending, each council sets its own notice and fee, from a few working days to three weeks, so check yours before you fix the date.

  2. 2

    Floors, stairs and lifts

Which floor, and does a lift take furniture? Stairs are charged by the flight from the first floor up, and a working lift removes the charge.

  3. 3

    The carry to the door

A long walk from the van, a narrow gate or a tight stairwell changes the time a job takes. Tell us, and it is planned rather than found.

Stairs and lifts

Floors, lifts and the carry from the van

Tell us which floor each address is on and whether a lift takes furniture. Stairs are charged by the flight from the first floor up, and a working lift removes the charge. A long walk from the van, a narrow gate or a tight stairwell also changes the time a job takes.

Tap your floor on each building, or drag the marker beside it.

Ground floor, or a working lift, at both addresses.

£10 per person, per flight, per hour at each address; a floor is 2 flights. This is the stair charge only — the hourly rate for the vehicle and crew, and the per-mile charge, are separate. Your written quote confirms the hours.

Extra help

Deciding how much help you need

Most moves need only a vehicle and a crew sized to the home. These are the situations where adding help usually saves time or reduces risk.

  • An extra mover

Worth it when there are stairs at both ends, a long carry from where the van can stop, or a tight window between collecting your keys and handing over your old ones.

For a Luton Box Van, a third mover takes the hourly rate from £100 to £130.

  • Packing

Worth it when you have less than a week, a lot of glass, china or artwork, or little time around work.

Packing packages include the materials: £400 for a 1-bedroom home, £600 for 2 bedrooms and £1,000 for 3. If you only want the breakables done, fragile-only packing covers glass, china, artwork and mirrors.

  • Dismantling and reassembly

Worth it when a bed, wardrobe or table will not pass through a stairwell or doorway in one piece.

A single or double bed is £50 to dismantle, or £90 to dismantle and rebuild; a standard two-door wardrobe is £60, or £110 with reassembly. Every dismantling booking has a £90 minimum.

  • Pianos, antiques and artwork

Worth it when an item is heavy, valuable or awkward enough to need extra wrapping and handling.

Priced for the item, after we know what it is and where it has to go.

  • Storage

Worth it when your new home is not ready on moving day, the dates do not line up, or you are downsizing and need somewhere for what does not fit yet.

We arrange secure storage near either address. Storage for a 1-bedroom flat's contents is £250 to £350 a month, VAT included, with the first month paid upfront; larger homes are priced on volume in your quote. Moving into and out of storage is priced like any other move.

How man & van in Cambridge works

Five steps, one coordinator, and a plan agreed before the van arrives.

  1. 1

    Tell us about your move

Use the quote form, call or WhatsApp. Add photos if it helps — the more we know, the more accurate the price.

  2. 2

    Get your written quote

An itemised quote within 24 hours, built from our published rates: vehicle, crew, hours and extras, line by line.

  3. 3

    Your coordinator takes over

Once you book, one named coordinator confirms the date, vehicle and crew, and stays your contact until the last box is in.

  4. 4

    Packed and loaded

Floors and doorways protected, furniture dismantled and blanket-wrapped, and the van loaded in the order you want it unloaded.

  5. 5

    Unloaded and rebuilt

Boxes go to the rooms you labelled, beds go back together, and the crew stays until you have walked the house.

Oba FrankVerified Google review
“We could not recommend AFS Removals highly enough. Their professionalism, organisation, and attention to detail throughout the entire moving process were exceptional. Every member of the team was friendly, reliable, and committed.”
Simon NewburyVerified Google review
“We had originally booked a local firm for our move, but due to a last minute exchange and insane demand for movers, none were available. AFS had a 3-man crew available at short notice who were brilliant and hardworking.”
Drew HarveyVerified Google review
“Booking was straightforward and AFS confirmed a few days before. The team turned up on time and were friendly and efficient. They packed up, drove to the delivery address and unpacked again, all with no drama or fuss.”

Questions

Man & Van in Cambridge: common questions

Do you cover all of Cambridge?
Yes. We cover all of Cambridge and the rest of Cambridgeshire, and we move people to and from anywhere in the UK. A long-distance move is priced from the same rate card as a local one — it just has more miles on it.
What are your prices for man & van in Cambridge?
The same as everywhere we work — our rates do not change by postcode. For example, transit lwb, driver only: £60/hr (2-hour minimum (£120)). Billed for the hours worked, never below the minimum. Mileage between your two addresses and any stairs (£10 per person, per flight, per hour at that address) are added in your written quote. Your itemised written quote arrives within 24 hours.
How far is Cambridge from your nearest office?
About 38 miles from our London office, as the crow flies. The time in your quote runs from the crew's arrival at your address, and the mileage is worked out from the road distance between your two addresses.
What is the minimum booking?
Two hours on the Small Transit and Transit LWB. Three hours on the Luton box van and the 5.5 and 7.5 tonne lorries.
Can I book a driver only, with no additional crew?
Yes, where the load allows it. Adding movers changes the hourly rate rather than adding a separate charge.
Is this suitable for a single item?
Yes. A single item, a part-load, or a full van run are all priced the same way — by the hour, plus mileage.
