What a move in York costs
Our rates are the same in York as everywhere else we work, and they are never changed by postcode.

Two worked examples
A 2-bedroom home, about 6 miles across York. A Luton Box Van with two movers is £100 an hour. Loading and unloading takes about 3 hours and the drive between the two addresses about 15 min, so 3 hr 30 min is booked: £350. Six miles at £1.80 adds £10.80, which comes to about £360.80 before any stairs, dismantling or packing.
The same home, 200 miles out of York. The drive takes about 3 hr 15 min, so 6 hr 30 min is booked (£650), and 200 miles × £1.80 adds £360: about £1,010. A long-distance move is priced from the same rate card as a local one; it just has more miles on it.

Do you pay for our journey to York?
No. Our nearest office is in Coventry, about 107 miles from York as the crow flies. That journey is not in your quote.
The hourly charge starts when the crew arrives at your first address, and the mileage covers only the road distance between the address you are leaving and the one you are moving to. That holds whether you are moving across York or from York to the other end of the country.

Planning a move in York: parking, footstreets and access
On a York moving day, the time a job takes depends mostly on where the van can stop and how far everything has to be carried. These are the checks worth making before you book, because each one can change the vehicle, the crew size or the timing in your quote.
Suspending a parking bay needs at least 21 days' notice

If there is nowhere a removal van can legally stop near your door, you can ask City of York Council to suspend parking bays for the day. The council needs at least 21 days' notice and charges £272 for a suspension. If you want the council to supply and place the “no waiting” cones, that costs £250 more; you can supply your own instead. These are council fees, separate from our rates.
Your application needs an overhead plan showing where the suspension starts and ends and which side of the road it covers. A Google Maps screenshot with the area highlighted is accepted; a Street View image is not. You will also be asked whether the bays are in a residents' parking (ResPark) zone or include a bus stop, taxi rank or Blue Badge bay. In a ResPark zone or on pay-and-display bays, the council may also charge for alternative parking for permit holders or for lost parking income.
Changes made more than 10 working days before the date are free. With less notice you are likely to need a new application, and a cancellation within 10 working days is charged in full. So apply once your moving date is reasonably firm, and tell us when you do, so the space you book fits the vehicle in your quote. The council also says a vehicle parking inside a suspended area needs a parking waiver, so ask about it when you apply.
These rules cover addresses inside the City of York Council area. If one of your addresses is in Selby or Malton (North Yorkshire Council) or Pocklington (East Riding of Yorkshire Council), that council's process applies instead.

When to apply for your moving date
Pick a date to see the last day to apply for a parking suspension, the last day to change it, and the deadline for a city centre access application. Weekends and bank holidays are skipped where the council counts working days.
Moving to or from a home inside the city walls
Much of the centre of York inside the city walls is a pedestrian zone, known locally as the footstreets. Between 10:30am and 5:00pm, seven days a week, vehicles are not allowed in. The council's rules say delivery vehicles must have left the footstreets before 10:30am and must not arrive until after 5:00pm.
Shambles and Stonegate are closed to general traffic at all times. Shambles allows loading before 10:30am and after 5:00pm; Stonegate only between 5:00am and 10:30am, with no evening access.

How we plan a move inside the walls
Load before 10:30am
The crew starts early, so the van is loaded and out of the footstreets before they close to vehicles.
Load after 5:00pm
Deliveries can arrive again from 5:00pm everywhere except Stonegate. An evening move carries our published 15% evening surcharge.
Park outside and carry
If the van cannot get close, or a gateway is too low for it, it parks outside the footstreets and the crew carries. A longer carry takes longer, so it is in the hours in your quote.
Access in restricted hours
The council's City Centre Vehicle Access Application needs at least 5 working days' notice and is meant for exceptional circumstances, so ask the council early rather than count on it.
Give us the exact address when you ask for a quote, so the loading time, vehicle size and route are planned around these windows before the day, not on it.
The bars: gateways in the walls
The medieval gateways through York's walls are known as bars. In October 2012 a delivery lorry became stuck under Micklegate Bar, and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue had to remove the spoiler from its cab roof to free it. That is why a home inside the walls sometimes suits a smaller vehicle, or a larger one parked outside with a longer carry.
Terraced streets and resident-permit (ResPark) zones
Many of York's residential streets are in residents' priority parking (ResPark) zones. Vehicles without a permit can usually wait only briefly (the council gives 10 minutes as typical), and even a permit gives priority rather than a guaranteed space. A removal can take several hours, so check the council's ResPark information for your street and, if there is no safe place to stop, consider a parking suspension.
When you ask for a quote, tell us how far the nearest legal stopping point is from your front door, because a long carry changes how long the job takes.

In older terraced houses, a narrow or boxed-in staircase is the usual reason a bed or wardrobe has to be taken apart rather than carried out whole. Tell us about it beforehand, and it is planned rather than found on the day.

Deciding how much help you need
Most York moves need only a vehicle and a crew sized to the home. These are the situations where adding help usually saves time or reduces risk.
An extra mover
Worth it when there are stairs at both ends, a long carry from the van (common on ResPark streets and inside the city walls), or a tight window between collecting your keys and handing over your old ones.
For a Luton Box Van, a third mover takes the hourly rate from £100 to £130.
Packing
Worth it when you have less than a week, a lot of glass, china or artwork, or little time around work.
Packing packages include the materials: £400 for a 1-bedroom home, £600 for 2 bedrooms and £1,000 for 3. If you only want the breakables done, fragile-only packing covers glass, china, artwork and mirrors.
Dismantling and reassembly
Worth it when a bed, wardrobe or table will not pass through a stairwell or doorway in one piece.
A single or double bed is £50 to dismantle, or £90 to dismantle and rebuild; a standard two-door wardrobe is £60, or £110 with reassembly. Every dismantling booking has a £90 minimum.

Worth it when an item is heavy, valuable or awkward enough to need extra wrapping and handling.
