Key takeaways

The short version
  • Book by 2pm and a home of up to two bedrooms can usually move the same day; larger homes usually move the next day. Both depend on a free van and crew.
  • Short notice costs nothing extra. The price comes from the same rate card as a move booked weeks ahead.
  • No London council in our data suspends a parking bay on the day. The shortest stated notice is 2 working days, so a same-day move is planned around the loading rules instead.
  • Loading rules are tight in the daytime: a 1-bedroom flat takes about 2 hours to load, 3 times Hackney's 40-minute yellow-line limit.
  • An evening same-day move adds 15% to the labour, £67.50 on our 1-bedroom example, and a weekday start after 18:00 falls outside the Congestion Charge hours.

Sometimes a move cannot wait. A tenancy ends sooner than planned, a sale completes on a day nobody expected, or the van you booked elsewhere does not turn up. In London, a same-day move is possible more often than people assume, but it works differently from a planned one. The van and crew are the easy part. The parking, the building and the time left in the day decide whether it happens.

This guide explains how a same-day man and van works with us: the size of home we can move today, what to send so the team can price it in minutes, how the day runs, and the London rules that can make same-day impossible on some streets. If you have more time than that, how far ahead to book movers in London covers the planned version.

Which moves can happen the same day?#

The rule is simple, and it is set by how long a move takes, not by how busy we are.

  • Up to two bedrooms, booked by 2pm. A studio, a one-bedroom or a two-bedroom home can usually be moved the same day if you book by 2pm
  • Three bedrooms and more, the next day. A larger home usually needs a bigger vehicle, a bigger crew and most of a working day, so we move it the next day
  • Always subject to a free van and crew. Every same-day booking depends on a vehicle and team being available that day. That is why the first step is a message, not a form
  • No premium for short notice. A same-day move is priced from the same rate card as one booked a month ahead

Why 2pm, and why two bedrooms? Because of the hours. On our quote form's figures, a two-bedroom home takes about 6 hr 15 min on the job across a short London move, from the crew's arrival to the last box down. A three-bedroom house takes about 8 hr 15 min. Start a three-bedroom move at 3pm and the crew is still carrying near midnight. A two-bedroom move booked by 2pm can still finish the same evening.

The last-minute removals in London page sets out the same rules in short. This guide goes through what happens behind them.

What to send in five minutes#

A same-day quote is only as fast as the information behind it. Our quote form asks the same questions for every move, and for a same-day job the team needs the answers at once, in one message. Here is what the form asks, in the order it asks it, cut down to what decides a same-day booking.

  1. Your move type. The form has an option called "Emergency or short-notice move". Say it is same-day, and say the time you must be out by
  2. Both postcodes. The collection and the delivery postcode. The form needs both, because without the delivery postcode there is no distance, no driving time and no mileage. Add any extra stop, for example a second pick-up
  3. The property and its size. House, flat or maisonette, the number of bedrooms, and whether it is lightly, normally or heavily furnished
  4. The floor and the lift at each end. Which floor, whether there is a lift, and whether the lift can take furniture. The form will not let a flat above the ground floor go through without the lift answer, because it changes the crew's time
  5. Stairs and the carry. Any stairs inside or outside, whether they are narrow, where a van can park (directly outside, nearby, or nowhere) and whether it is more than about 20 metres from the door to the van
  6. Access restrictions. Tick any that apply on the form: permit or controlled parking, a narrow street, loading restrictions, set moving hours, concierge or building approval, or the Congestion Charge zone
  7. The time. Your best arrival window (early morning, morning or afternoon), whether you need an evening service, and whether the day is a Sunday or bank holiday
  8. The day's risks. Whether there is a key handover on the day, whether it could be late, whether a lift or loading bay has to be booked, and whether the building needs documents from us
  9. Photos and the inventory. Photos of each room and of anything large, a note of fragile or high-value items, and roughly how many boxes (none packed yet, under 20, 20 to 50, 50 to 100, or more)
  10. Any extras. Packing, dismantling and TV handling, which we only do as part of a removal
  11. How to reach you. Your name, a phone number or email, your WhatsApp number, and how you would like us to reply

Ten photos and a few lines of text cover all of it. A room-by-room video is just as good. The two answers people most often leave out are the lift size and where the van can stop, and on a same-day job those are the two that matter most, because there is no time to find out later.

The questions are the same as on our full quote form. On a same-day job they arrive in one message, so the team can check a van, a crew and the kerb at both ends in one go.

A same-day move, hour by hour#

Here is how a same-day booking typically runs, using a one-bedroom flat moved about 5 miles across London. The times are an example, not a promise: the real ones depend on when you message, which van is free and how far away it is. The work times come from the loading and unloading hours our quote form uses for a one-bedroom home.

Example: a one-bedroom flat, same day

  1. 10am, you message

WhatsApp the checklist above: both postcodes, floors and lifts, photos, the time you must be out, and where the van can stop.

  2. Shortly after, the team checks

Is a van of the right size free, and a crew? Can the van stop legally at both ends? Is there a lift to book? If any answer is no, you hear that first.

  3. Before 2pm, you book

The price is confirmed in writing and a 20% deposit secures the slot. The same rate card applies as for any other day.

  4. Meanwhile, you prepare

Pack and seal what you can, clear a path to the door, take the bed apart if you can, and book the lift if the building allows it.

  5. 1pm, the crew arrives

The Luton Box Van with 2 movers. The clock starts at your door, not at our base.

  6. About 3pm, loaded

About 2 hours of loading for a one-bedroom home, more with stairs or a long carry.

  7. About 3:15pm, at the new address

About 15 min of driving for 5 miles on our quote form's model.

  8. About 5:15pm, done

About 2 hours of unloading. Charged as 4 hr 30 min, because time is rounded up to the half hour.

The quiet hours between booking and arrival matter more than people expect. Everything packed before the crew arrives is time you do not pay for, and on a same-day move it is often the difference between finishing in daylight and running into the evening. How long a London house move takes explains what stretches each stage.

How long the job takes once the van arrives#

The 2pm cut-off is about the finish, not the start. This table shows when each same-day home would be finished if the crew arrived at noon, 2pm or 4pm, using our quote form's loading, unloading and driving times for a move of about 5 miles, ground floor at both ends. Stairs, a long carry or unpacked boxes add to every figure.

HomeVehicle and crewTime on the jobArrive 12pmArrive 2pmArrive 4pm

2 bedrooms5.5 Tonne Lorry, 3 movers6 hr 15 mindone about 6:15pmdone about 8:15pmdone about 10:15pm

Two things stand out. A studio is easy at almost any time of day. A two-bedroom home is not: with 6 hr 15 min on the job, a 4pm arrival runs well into the evening. If you are moving a two-bedroom home today, message as early as you can, not at 1.55pm. An early booking gives us more chance of a morning or early-afternoon crew, and gives you a finish before dark.

The vehicle changes too. On our quote form, a two-bedroom home is suggested a 5.5 Tonne Lorry, not a van. That matters at the kerb, because some loading rules treat a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes differently, as the Westminster rules below show. If your load is lighter than a typical two-bedroom home, say so and send photos: a smaller vehicle may do it, and it is easier to stop.

Why you cannot get a parking suspension for today#

On a planned move, a parking bay suspension reserves space outside your door. On a same-day move, that option does not exist. Councils need notice to put up warning signs, so drivers parked in the bays have time to move. Hackney, for example, says it puts up advance warning notices around 3 to 7 days before a suspension starts.

We read the suspension rules for every London council on our parking suspension finder. Of the 28 councils that state a single notice figure, none allows a same-day suspension. The shortest stated figure is 2 working days. These are the fastest:

CouncilNotice the council statesShortest figure
Kensington & Chelsea10 working days (permit bays), 2 (pay-by-phone)2 working days
Camden17 days advised. 3 days minimum3 days
Bromley3 working days3 working days
Ealing3 working days3 working days
Bexley3 working days3 working days

Even at the fastest councils, Kensington & Chelsea, Camden, Bromley, Ealing and Bexley, the notice is days, not hours, and Kensington & Chelsea's 2 working days apply only to its pay-by-phone bays; its permit bays need 10. Camden is a good example: it advises booking 17 days ahead, and the minimum it accepts is 3 days before the suspension starts. Kingston states no minimum but asks you to phone if a suspension starts within 5 days. The pages of 0 more councils could not be read when we checked, and in Havering and Enfield movers cannot book a bay suspension at all.

Late applications do not solve it either. Hackney says it may look at a late application if you explain why, with an extra £161 admin fee, but that is for a suspension starting days later, not today. Dispensations, which let a vehicle wait where it otherwise could not, are faster but still not same-day. Bexley asks for a dispensation application at least 1 working day before it starts, and says one received later may not be approved in time.

So a same-day move is always planned without a suspension. If your street genuinely cannot take a van without one, the honest answer may be the next working day, or a few days later, and we will say so. Parking suspension or dispensation explains the difference if you have a little more time.

Where the van can stop instead#

Without a suspension, the van relies on the loading rules: the time a vehicle may stop on yellow lines or in bays while goods are carried. The national rules are in the Highway Code. Rule 238 says you must not wait or park on yellow lines during the times on the time plates, or on the zone entry signs in a controlled parking zone, and double yellow lines mean no waiting at any time. Rule 247 says not to load or unload where yellow marks on the kerb and upright signs show a loading restriction. Within those rules, each council sets how much loading time it allows.

Hackney: 40 minutes on yellow lines

Hackney allows domestic removals to load and unload on single and double yellow lines, but loading must be continuous and last no more than 40 minutes. Longer than that needs a suspension or a dispensation.

Westminster: it depends on the hour

Westminster sets loading limits by time of day. For commercial vehicles, yellow lines allow loading for as long as necessary from 8.30am to 11am, only 20 minutes from 11am to 6.30pm, and no time limit on single yellow lines from 6.30pm to 8.30am. In paid and resident bays, the limit is 20 minutes during controlled hours. For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes laden, the daytime yellow-line limit is 20 to 40 minutes. Loading must be continuous and visible, and it is never allowed on a loading ban, zig zags, specialist bays or suspended bays.

Elsewhere

Our sourced council notes give a few more examples. Islington lets clearly branded removal vehicles stop on a single yellow line or in a resident bay for as long as needed, if loading is continuous and no other loading restriction applies. Barnet allows loading on yellow lines in its controlled zones for up to 40 minutes, unless kerb marks show a loading ban. Camden says there is an exemption when a vehicle is continuously engaged in a property move. Every borough is different, which is why the street matters as much as the postcode. Moving day in a controlled parking zone covers zone hours, visitor permits and bays.

Why the daytime limits bite

The trouble is that a home takes longer to load than most daytime limits allow. This table sets the loading time our quote form uses for each same-day home against two of those limits.

HomeLoading at the collectionHackney yellow line (40 min)Westminster yellow line, 11am–6.30pm (20 min)Westminster single yellow, after 6.30pm
Studio1 hour2 × the limit3 × the limitNo time limit
1 bedroom2 hours3 × the limit6 × the limitNo time limit
2 bedrooms3 hours5 × the limit9 × the limitNo time limit

Even a studio takes 2 times Hackney's limit to load. In practice, a same-day crew works around this in three ways: by stopping in a bay or space that has no time limit at that hour, by choosing a time when the limits relax (in Westminster, after 6.30pm), or by loading in short legal stops if the street allows. Tell us exactly what the kerb looks like at both ends, photos of the signs are ideal, and we plan the stop before the crew sets off. Every minute spent walking from a distant space is paid time, so a close legal stop is worth more than a bigger van parked further away.

AFS Removals mover moving boxes on a sack trolley
When the van has to stop further away, a sack trolley and boxes packed and stacked by the door keep the walk short. On a same-day move, that preparation is the one thing you control.

Lifts, concierges and building rules on the day#

If either address is a flat in a managed block, the building can decide the day as much as the council. Many blocks need the goods lift booked, a concierge told, or a set moving window, and each building sets its own notice. There is no official notice period to rely on, so ask at once.

  • Call the concierge or managing agent first. Ask whether the lift can be booked today, for how long, and whether it takes furniture
  • Ask about moving hours. Some buildings allow moves only at set times, and a same-day slot has to fit inside them
  • Ask whether they need documents. If the building wants an insurance certificate or a risk assessment from the removal company, tell us in your first message so it can be sent on the day
  • Check the loading bay. A block's own loading bay can be the best stop of all, if management allows it

If the lift cannot be booked, the stairs are charged as on any move: £10 per person, per flight, per hour, for the time at that address. For our one-bedroom example from a third floor with no lift, that adds £240. Removal stairs charge explained works through the rest. How to book a goods lift for moving day has the email to send.

Evening same-day moves: what the 15% buys#

A move booked late in the day often runs into the evening, and an evening service costs 15% more on the hourly labour. On our quote form, the surcharge falls on the removal labour and any dismantling or TV work, not on the mileage, and it is not added on top of the Sunday and bank holiday surcharge. When you fill in the form, it asks whether you need an evening service, and your written quote shows the surcharge as its own line. These figures use the same 5-mile examples as above, ground floor at both ends.

HomeDaytime estimateEvening surcharge (+15% on labour)Evening estimate
Studio£193.50£28.13£221.63
1 bedroom£459£67.50£526.50
2 bedrooms£1,050£156£1,206

The evening can save money elsewhere. TfL's Congestion Charge is £18 a day when paid on the day or in advance, and it applies from 07:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and 12:00 to 18:00 at weekends and bank holidays. On a weekday, a move inside the zone that starts after 18:00 falls outside the charging hours, so the charge does not appear as a line in your quote. On the studio, the evening surcharge is £28.13, only £10.13 more than the £18 a daytime move inside the zone would add. On the one-bedroom flat the surcharge is £67.50, so the saving covers less of it.

The bigger saving is often at the kerb. In Westminster, single yellow lines have no loading time limit after 6.30pm for commercial vehicles, where in the afternoon they allow 20 minutes. If your street has no bay you can use, an evening start can be the only way to make a same-day move legal at all. We do not ask you to choose an evening to fill our diary; we suggest it when the street makes it the better plan.

What makes same-day impossible#

Most same-day requests can be done. These are the situations where the honest answer is no, or not today.

  • The home is too big for the hours left. Three bedrooms or more usually move the next day, and a two-bedroom home booked late may need to start the next morning
  • There is no van or crew free. Same-day work depends on what is free that day. If nothing is, we say so straight away rather than promising a slot we cannot keep
  • The street needs a suspension. If there is no legal place to stop within a reasonable carry at either end, today is not safe, and the council's notice sets the earliest date
  • The building says no. A block that needs notice for the lift, or allows moves only at set times, can rule out today
  • Loading on the street is banned. Yellow kerb marks with a loading ban, a red route, or a bus lane at the door leave nowhere to stop
  • The delivery address is not ready. If you cannot get into the new home today, the load needs somewhere to go

When the answer is no for today, the next working day is often yes. A next-day move gives the team time to plan the stop, and gives you time to book a lift or ask the council about a dispensation.

When the keys are not ready at the other end#

Same-day moves often start because of a completion. If the old home has to be empty today but the new one is not ready, your belongings can go into storage the same day, subject to availability, and be delivered when you get the keys. Storage is arranged through a partner, and moving into and out of it is priced like any other move.

If there is a key handover on the day, say so in your first message, and say whether it could be late. Waiting at the new address is charged at the waiting rate, so it helps to know early. Completion day removals in London explains how to plan around a chain, and moving house at short notice has a triage plan for the packing.

What a same-day move costs#

A same-day move costs exactly what the same move would cost on any other weekday: the same vehicle, crew, hourly rate, minimum and mileage. There is no urgency premium. On the 5-mile examples above, that is £193.50 for a studio, £459 for a one-bedroom home and £1,050 for a two-bedroom home, before stairs, packing or road charges. A small job in our Small Transit (SWB) with two movers is £75 an hour.

The only time-based extras are the ones every move has: 15% in the evening and 20% on a Sunday or bank holiday. Saturdays carry no surcharge. How much a man and van costs per hour in London goes through every rate, the minimum and the rounding. For whole homes, the London house removals page shows the same rate card by home size.

How to reach us for a same-day move#

For a same-day move, message rather than fill in a long form. The phone lines and WhatsApp are open seven days a week, 8:00am – 10:30pm.

For a planned move, the written quote arrives within 24 hours. For a same-day one, tell us it is same-day in the first line, so it is read as one. Either way, the team confirms the final price in writing before the crew sets off.

For a small load, start from the man and van in London page, which lists every van with its rates. For a short-notice home move, the last-minute removals in London page has the same rules on one screen. And if your move turns out to be bigger than a few rooms, the house removals in London team can plan it for the next day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a man and van the same day in London?
Yes, for homes up to two bedrooms booked by 2pm, if a van and crew are free. Larger homes usually move the next day. Message us on WhatsApp with both postcodes, the floors and lifts, photos and where the van can stop, and the team tells you straight away whether today is possible.
Is a same-day move more expensive?
No. There is no charge for short notice: the move is priced from the same rate card as any other day. The evening surcharge (+15%) and the Sunday and bank holiday surcharge (+20%) still apply, as they do on every move.
Can I get a parking suspension for a same-day move?
No. No London council in our data suspends a bay on the day, because warning signs have to go up first. The shortest stated notice is 2 working days. A same-day move is planned around the loading rules on the street instead, such as Hackney's 40 minutes on yellow lines or Westminster's unlimited single-yellow loading after 6.30pm.
What do I need to send for a same-day quote?
Both postcodes, the type and size of home, the floor and lift at each end and whether the lift takes furniture, any stairs, where the van can park, any access restrictions, your arrival window, whether there is a key handover today, photos of the rooms and large items, roughly how many boxes, and how to reach you.
What if my new home is not ready on the day?
Your belongings can go into storage the same day, subject to availability, and be delivered when you get the keys. Tell us about any key handover in your first message, because waiting at the new address is charged at the waiting rate.
