Key takeaways

The short version
  • The council usually sets your deadline, not the movers. For a normal Friday move, London councils need a suspension application between 4 and 17 calendar days ahead. We can often move a small home the same day.
  • Working days and calendar days give different answers. 22 councils count working days and 6 calendar days, so Southwark's 7 days mean applying 7 days ahead while Hackney's 7 working days mean 10.
  • Bank holidays push the date back. Westminster's 10 working days mean applying 15 days before a Friday in February, but 18 days before the first Friday after New Year.
  • Book the movers a day before your council deadline, not after it. You need the van size to know how many bays to suspend, and a written quote comes within 24 hours.
  • If you rent, the landlord notice comes first. Two months' notice under the Renters' Rights Act is a longer lead than any council's, so the tenancy date sets the plan and everything else fits inside it.

Most advice on booking movers gives a number of weeks and leaves it there. In London that misses the point. The removal itself can often be booked at short notice, but the space for the van outside your door cannot. If your street needs a parking bay suspension, the council's notice period decides the last day you can safely sort out the move, and those periods differ from borough to borough in both length and the way the days are counted.

This guide takes the notice rules 28 London councils publish, turns each into an actual latest-application date for three real Friday moves in 2027, and works back from there to the date to book your removal. It also covers the other lead times that matter: the notice on a rented home, the goods lift, and packing.

Why the council, not the removal company, often sets the date#

A removal company's diary fills up, but it is flexible. Crews and vans move between jobs, and a slot can open up at short notice. A council's suspension process is not flexible. It has a fixed notice period, it has to put warning signs on the street in advance, and it counts days in its own way. Hackney says it aims to put its yellow warning signs up around 3 to 7 days before a suspension starts, which is why an application the day before is no use even if a council were willing to accept one.

That gives two different kinds of lead time:

  • The removal lead time is how far ahead a van and crew of the right size are free on your date. It depends on the season, the day of the week and the size of the move
  • The kerb lead time is how far ahead the council needs your application to reserve space outside. It depends only on the council and the calendar

In much of London the second one is longer. You can only apply once you know how much kerb you need, and that depends on the vehicle, which depends on the quote. So the quote has to come first, and the council deadline sets how early that has to be.

Not every move needs a suspension. A driveway, an off-street loading bay, a quiet street or a short stop on a single yellow line can be enough, and parking suspension or dispensation explains when each option fits. If you are not sure, tell us what the kerb is like at both ends when you ask for a quote. The rest of this guide assumes at least one end does need a suspension, which is common in inner London.

How London councils count their notice#

Read the notice on a council page carefully, because "7 days" means different things in different places. Of the 28 councils whose notice we could turn into a date, 22 count working days and 6 count calendar days or weeks. Three details change the answer:

  • Working days or calendar days. A working day excludes Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. Wandsworth says so directly: it does not count bank and public holidays or weekends as notification days. Hammersmith & Fulham, which asks for 8 days for up to six bays for up to three days, does the opposite and counts Saturdays and Sundays as notification days. Seven working days is at least nine calendar days, and often more
  • Whether the day you apply counts. Wandsworth asks for seven clear working days and says the day of submission is not included. Hackney gives an example: apply on a Friday and its 7 working days start the following Monday
  • Cut-off times. Wandsworth treats an application received after 3pm as received the next working day. Hammersmith & Fulham wants the application and payment by midday on the day the notice period starts, and by midday on the Friday before if that day falls at a weekend

To date every council the same way, we used the strictest reading that fits these rules. For working-day councils, the application day must itself be a working day, and the full number of working days must fall between it and the first day of the suspension, so neither the day you apply nor moving day is counted. For calendar-day councils, the date is that many days before the move, moved back to the previous working day if it lands on a weekend or bank holiday. A council can accept a later application than this, but it will not object to an earlier one.

Some councils also give a second, shorter figure, such as Camden, which advises booking 17 days ahead but accepts bookings up to 3 days before. We used the figure that gives the space the best chance of being clear. Camden's own reason for 17 days is that it allows a warning period, so a space is more likely to be free.

The latest day to apply, council by council#

The chart below dates every council for three Friday moves. Friday 5 February 2027 has no bank holidays nearby, so it shows each council's normal lead. Friday 8 January 2027 is the first Friday after New Year, with three bank holidays in the notice window. Friday 2 April 2027 falls the week after Easter. Switch between them to see what the calendar does.

Not modelled, because the notice is not a single stated figure or the page could not be read: Waltham Forest, Havering, Kingston upon Thames, Richmond upon Thames, Enfield. Check those councils directly.

The latest working day to apply for a parking bay suspension in each London council, for three Friday moves, from each council's published notice (read 3 November 2026) and the GOV.UK bank holiday list. Councils whose notice is not a single stated figure are listed under the chart.

For the February move, the longest lead is 17 days, for Camden, and the median is 10 days. In all, 12 councils need an application at least two weeks before. The 10-working-day councils (Westminster, Lambeth, Kensington & Chelsea, Newham, Greenwich, Croydon, Hounslow, Merton and Harrow) all land on Thu 21 Jan, 15 days before the move: ten working days in between, two weekends, and the application day itself. The shortest leads are the 3-working-day councils, Bromley, Ealing and Bexley, at 4 days.

Notice how a smaller number does not always mean less time. Southwark's 7 calendar days give an application date of Fri 29 Jan, 7 days ahead, while Hackney's 7 working days give Tue 26 Jan, 10 days ahead. The City of London's 6 working days to process (Wed 27 Jan) need more time than Hammersmith & Fulham's 8 calendar days (Thu 28 Jan).

Some councils give a processing time rather than a notice period: Harrow says up to 10 working days, Redbridge a decision within 7 working days, and the City of London 6 working days. We dated those the same way as a notice period, because an application still waiting for a decision is not a suspension.

What bank holidays do to the deadline#

For calendar-day councils a bank holiday changes almost nothing, unless the deadline lands on one. For working-day councils every bank holiday in the window adds a day. Over Christmas and New Year that adds up quickly.

Council's ruleFri 5 Feb 2027Fri 8 Jan 2027Fri 2 Apr 2027
10 working days (e.g. Westminster)Thu 21 Jan (15 days)Mon 21 Dec (18 days)Tue 16 Mar (17 days)

17 days advised (Camden)Tue 19 Jan (17 days)Tue 22 Dec (17 days)Tue 16 Mar (17 days)

Over New Year, the number of councils needing at least two weeks rises from 12 to 19, and the median lead from 10 to 15 days. For a 10-working-day council, the last day to apply for a move on 8 January is Mon 21 Dec, before Christmas. The 7-working-day councils land on Thu 24 Dec, Christmas Eve. In practice that means the paperwork for an early-January move is a December job, done before the holidays start.

Easter adds less, but it catches the councils with short notice. Bromley's 3 working days normally mean applying on the Monday of moving week. For a move on Friday 2 April, Good Friday and Easter Monday push it back to Thu 25 Mar, 8 days ahead. Bank holidays in England and Wales are listed on GOV.UK, including substitute days when Christmas or Boxing Day fall at a weekend, as they do in 2027.

Bank holidays matter for the move itself too. A move on a bank holiday is charged at our Sunday and bank holiday rate, 20% above the weekday rate, so a date just after a holiday can be the better choice even before you count the council's days.

Councils where the notice is not a simple number#

The chart leaves out 5 councils, because their pages do not give one figure we could turn into a date: Waltham Forest, Havering, Kingston upon Thames, Richmond upon Thames, Enfield. Apply as early as you can for these, and ring the council if the page is unclear.

CouncilWhat the page said on 3 November 2026What to do
Waltham ForestNot stated. Check with the councilAsk the council when you apply
Kingston upon ThamesNo minimum stated. The fee is higher with under a week's noticeApply more than a week ahead to pay the lower fee
Richmond upon ThamesThe page says both 10 and 7 working days. Check with the councilWork to the longer figure
HaveringResidents cannot book a bay suspension. Movers apply for a dispensationAsk the council how long a dispensation takes
EnfieldBay suspensions are only for utility works, funerals and events. Movers apply for a temporary dispensationAsk the council how long a dispensation takes

For Richmond, the safe reading of a page that gives two figures is the longer one. For Havering and Enfield, the question is not a suspension at all, and parking suspension or dispensation covers what a dispensation does and does not do. Our parking suspension finder shows each council's page and rules in one place.

What applying late costs#

Missing the deadline does not always mean losing the space, but it often costs more. Several councils link the fee to how much notice you give, and the gap can be larger than the suspension fee itself.

  • [Westminster](https://www.westminster.gov.uk/parking/suspensions-dispensations-skips/parking-bay-suspensions) asks for 10 working days and adds a £20 short-notice fee for applications within 10 calendar days of the start
  • [Hackney](https://hackney.gov.uk/suspensions/) asks for 7 working days, may consider a late application if you explain why, and charges an extra £161 admin fee for it
  • Kensington & Chelsea lists a short-notice charge of £408
  • Wandsworth charged a lower booking fee with 10 days' notice than with 7: £82.50 against £93.20
  • Ealing charged less per bay with 7 working days' notice than at its standard 3
  • Harrow sets its admin fee by notice: £60 with over 10 working days, £120 with 3 to 10, £178 with under 3
  • [Camden](https://www.camden.gov.uk/parking-bay-suspensions) has a short-notice charge for bookings later than 17 days, but says it does not apply when you are moving home

So even where a council will accept a late application, the cheaper route is to know your date early. These figures are as the councils' pages showed them on 3 November 2026 (Westminster, Hackney and Camden checked again on 5 November). Parking suspensions for moving day has every council's full fee.

Working back from moving day: one move, start to finish#

Here is the whole chain for one move, worked out with the same rules. A one-bedroom flat in Hackney moves to a flat in Lambeth on Friday 5 February 2027. Both streets need a suspension, so there are two councils, two deadlines and one plan. Hackney's 7 working days give Tue 26 Jan. Lambeth's 10 working days give Thu 21 Jan. The earlier one, Lambeth's, sets the plan.

Hackney to Lambeth, Friday 5 February 2027

  1. Sat 5 Dec 2026 or before

If you rent, give two months' notice, timed to your rent day. This is the first date in the chain, and the longest lead.

  2. As soon as the notice is in

Ask for a quote with a room list, both addresses, the floors and lifts. Ask both buildings about lift bookings and move hours.

  3. Wed 20 Jan at the latest

Have the written quote and book. The quote tells you the vehicle and so how much kerb to suspend. The 20% deposit secures the date.

  4. Thu 21 Jan

Apply to Lambeth for the suspension at the new address. This is its last day for 10 working days' notice.

  5. Tue 26 Jan

Apply to Hackney for the suspension at the old address. Its 7 working days start the next working day.

  6. The week before

Check the warning signs are up on both streets. Confirm the lift slots in writing and send us the suspension details.

  7. Friday 5 February

Moving day. Report any car in a suspended bay to the council straight away.

Two things stand out. First, the removal booking is not the critical date. The quote can come within 24 hours, so it could wait until Wed 20 Jan, but it cannot wait longer, because you cannot apply for the right number of bays without it. Second, the councils are a fortnight ahead of the move, while the landlord is two months ahead. If you rent, that notice is what really sets the timetable. If you own and are waiting on completion, the date is set by the chain, and the kerb deadline is the reason to agree a date as soon as you can.

For the rest of the jobs around a London move, week by week, use our London house move checklist. This guide is only about the dates.

How far ahead to book the movers, in each situation#

Put together, the advice depends on which lead time is longest for your move. A single number of weeks would be too long for some London moves and too short for others, so here is the reasoning for each case instead.

You need a suspension at one or both ends

Book the movers at least one working day before the earlier of your councils' deadlines. For a Friday move with no bank holidays, that means booking 5 to 18 days ahead, depending on the councils. Over New Year it reaches 19 days. These are the latest safe dates, not the best ones. Booking earlier gives you room to change the date if completion moves, and it gives a better choice of start times.

You do not need a suspension

Then the council does not set your date at all, and the removal company's availability does. With us, a home of up to two bedrooms can often be moved the same day if you book by 2pm, and larger homes the next day, subject to a crew and van being free. There is no premium for short notice, so booking late costs nothing extra, though it narrows your choice of day and time. Last-minute removals in London explains how short-notice moves work.

You rent

Your notice to the landlord comes first. GOV.UK says that since 1 May 2026 a tenant ends an assured periodic tenancy with two months' notice, in writing, given on the day rent is due or the day before. You keep paying rent until the notice ends, and you and the landlord can agree a shorter period in writing. GOV.UK's guidance for landlords adds that two months is the most notice a landlord can ask a tenant for. Our landlord notice letter has a template. Once the notice is in, every other date in this guide fits inside it.

You are moving at a busy time

A busy street may already have a suspension booked for building work or another move. Apply to the council as soon as you know the date and the van, not on the last permitted day. Hackney asks applicants to check for live suspensions before applying, which is worth doing on any busy street.

The other lead times: the lift and packing#

The goods lift

No official source sets a notice period for booking a lift in a London block. Each building sets its own. Ask the managing agent or concierge at both addresses as soon as you have a date, and book the lift and the removal around the same start time. If the building needs paperwork from the removal company, ask for it when you book. How to book a goods lift for moving day has the email to send and a step-by-step timeline.

Packing

If we pack for you, it is booked with the removal on the same quote, because we only offer packing as part of a move. The size of the packing job is worth knowing when you choose dates. Our packing packages run from 2 packers for up to 3 hours for a one-bedroom home to 3 packers for up to 6 hours for three bedrooms and 4 packers for up to 8 hours for five. A larger home's packing can take a full working day before the van is even loaded, so ask when you book whether packing should be on the same day or an earlier one. An earlier packing day means the crew is booked on two days, which is one more reason to book a larger home early.

Keys and completion

If you are buying, the moving date depends on completion, and you may not know the date until late. That can be shorter than your council's notice. Ask your conveyancer for a likely date early, book the movers provisionally, and apply for the suspension once the date is firm, even if that means a late-application fee. If the keys are delayed on the day, we can arrange storage through a partner, subject to availability.

AFS Removals mover taping up a packed box
Packing a five-bedroom home is 4 packers for up to 8 hours, so it can need its own day in the plan, booked on the same quote as the move.

What if you are already inside the deadline?#

If your move is closer than your council's notice period, you still have options. None of them is as reliable as a suspension, but each can work on the right street.

  • Ask the council anyway. Hackney says it may look at late applications if you explain why, with its late fee. Camden accepts bookings up to 3 days before. A short-notice application may still be approved
  • Use the loading rules. Many councils allow loading on yellow lines for a limited time. Hackney allows continuous loading for domestic removals on single and double yellow lines for up to 40 minutes. Parking suspension or dispensation sets out where a dispensation or a loading exemption can stand in
  • Tell us what the kerb is like. We plan the vehicle, the crew and the carry around where the van can legally stop. A smaller van that fits a loading bay can beat a larger one that has to park further away
  • Read the time plate. Controlled hours differ by zone, and some zones do not operate on every day of the week. Hammersmith & Fulham gives the example of a Saturday with no controlled hours. If your date can move by a day, check whether another day is easier at the kerb

For the parking rules in a controlled zone, moving day in a controlled parking zone covers the hours and bays.

What booking with us involves, and when#

When you are ready to book, this is the order things happen in with us. It is quick enough that the removal booking never needs to be the slow part of the plan.

  • The quote. Send a room list or photos, both addresses, the floor and lift at each end, and where the van can stop. You get an itemised written quote within 24 hours
  • The booking. A 20% deposit secures the date. The team confirms the final price in writing
  • The suspension. You apply to the council and pay its fee. We tell you the vehicle and its length so you can ask for the right number of bays, and we plan the van and crew around the space you get
  • Short notice. Homes up to two bedrooms can often move the same day if booked by 2pm, larger homes the next day, subject to availability. Short notice costs nothing extra
  • Bank holidays and Sundays. These carry a 20% surcharge on the hourly rate, and Saturdays carry none

If you are planning a whole-home move, our London house removals page shows what is included and how the quote is built. Book early enough to beat your council's deadline, and the rest of the plan follows. For a full house in London, the house removals team can suggest the right van and crew, which is the figure your suspension application needs.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I book movers in London?
At least one working day before your council's parking suspension deadline, if your street needs one. For a Friday move with no bank holidays, the deadlines we can date run from 4 to 17 calendar days before the move, and up to 18 days over New Year. Without a suspension, a home of up to two bedrooms can often be moved the same day if booked by 2pm, subject to availability.
Do London councils count weekends in the notice period?
It depends on the council. 22 of the 28 councils we dated count working days, which leave out weekends and bank holidays. Wandsworth also leaves out the day you apply. Hammersmith & Fulham counts Saturdays and Sundays. Read the wording on your council's page before you work out the date.
Do bank holidays change when I have to apply?
Yes, for councils that count working days. Westminster's 10 working days mean applying 15 days before a Friday move in February, but 18 days before Friday 8 January 2027, because Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year's Day fall in the window.
Is there an extra charge for booking a move at short notice?
Not with us. A last-minute move is priced from the same rate card. Homes up to two bedrooms can often move the same day if booked by 2pm, and larger homes the next day, subject to availability. Some councils do charge more for a late suspension application, such as Hackney's £161 late admin fee.
Who applies for the parking suspension?
You do, and you pay the council's fee. We tell you the vehicle and its length so you can ask for the right number of bays, and we plan the van and crew around the space the council gives you.
