In most of London, the hard part of moving day is not the lifting. It is finding a legal place for the van. A removal van that has to park two streets away adds carrying time, and carrying time is what you pay for. This guide sets out how each London borough lets you reserve kerb space, how much notice it wants and what it charges.
What a parking suspension is#
A parking bay suspension takes one or more bays out of normal use for a set time. The council puts up yellow warning signs, and only the vehicles named on the booking may park there. Camden describes it as the parking, waiting and loading controls being suspended and the space reserved for a particular purpose. Most boroughs measure a space as five metres.
A suspension is not a guarantee. Greenwich says it cannot stop people ignoring the signs or remove illegally parked vehicles. Barnet says offenders get a penalty charge notice and may be relocated or removed in certain circumstances. Book early, so the warning signs are up for longer, and report any car parked in your bays as soon as you see it.
A dispensation (some councils call it a waiver) is different. It lets a named vehicle wait or load on a yellow line, rather than reserving a bay. Not every council offers one, and some only do so where there is no alternative.
Who arranges it#
At AFS, the customer arranges and pays for any parking suspension. That matches term 4 of our quotation. We do not apply to the council on your behalf. When you book, tell us the bay location, the dates and the reference number, and we plan the van and the crew around it. Our house removals in London page explains how a London move is quoted.
You may need two suspensions: one at the old address and one at the new. Each council runs its own system, so a move from Hackney to Lambeth means two separate applications, two fees and two notice periods.
Notice periods and costs, borough by borough#
To see one council's rules on their own, use our London parking suspension finder: pick your borough or area and it shows how to apply, the notice period and the fee.
Every figure below was taken from the council's own page on 3 November 2026 (Enfield's on 4 November). Councils change fees, usually each April, so check the live page before you pay. Where a page did not state something, the table says so. The table covers 31 of London's 33 councils (32 boroughs plus the City of London).

Havering is the odd one out. Its bay suspensions are for utility and street-work companies only, so a resident moving house cannot book one. The council names a dispensation for removals instead, but the page does not give its fee or notice period, so check with the council.
We could not load the pages for Lewisham or Brent, so they are left out. If you are moving in one of those boroughs, check with the council directly.
What the moving-home discounts are worth
Some councils treat a house move more gently than building work or filming. The details differ, so read them closely.
- Camden waives the space charge on the first day only, for up to three consecutive spaces, and the short-notice charge does not apply. The £66.66 admin charge still does.
- Hackney waives the bay fee for up to three bays on the first day of a moving-home suspension. Its own example puts three bays for one day at £100.
- Tower Hamlets offers residents a limited suspension for moving house with no bay charge for up to two bays for one day. The service charge still applies.
- Greenwich lets a resident who is moving ask for a second bay, free on the first day and charged from the second.
- Waltham Forest charges domestic removals the application fee only, £120 for the first day.
- Sutton goes furthest: domestic removals are free. Everyone else pays £112 admin + £40 per bay per day.
For other boroughs, the standard rate applies. A two-bay, one-day suspension in Southwark would be £93 + (2 × £53.15) = £199.30, for example. In Barnet it would be £171.39 + (2 × £69.63) = £310.65.
Which boroughs name removals
Camden, Westminster, Southwark, Barnet, Hackney, Islington, Newham, Ealing, Bromley, Redbridge, Hillingdon, Bexley and Kingston upon Thames list removals, home removals or a house move as a reason for a suspension. Harrow names furniture removals in the terms on its application form. Waltham Forest, Merton, Tower Hamlets, Greenwich, Hounslow and Sutton have specific rules for domestic removals or house moves. Barking & Dagenham and Havering name removals on their dispensation pages, not their suspension pages. Richmond upon Thames and the City of London do not name removals. The other pages we checked do not say either way, so confirm with the council that a house move qualifies before you rely on it.
How many bays to book#
Measure what you actually need. A removal van needs its own length, plus room behind to open the doors or lower a tail lift, plus space for the crew to work. Merton suggests checking the number of bays with your removal company, which is sensible advice anywhere.
Ask us which vehicle is planned for your move, and we will tell you its length. Book the bays right outside your door if you can. Every extra metre between the van and the door adds time to the job, and in a flat with stairs or a long corridor that adds up fast. Our guide to moving a flat in London covers lifts, stairs and building rules.
When to do what#
Parking suspension timeline
3 weeks before
Find out whether each address is in a controlled parking zone, and which bays sit outside the door. Read each council's page. Camden advises booking 17 days ahead.
2 weeks before
Apply. This covers Islington, Haringey, and the 10-working-day boroughs such as Westminster, Lambeth, Greenwich, Croydon, Merton, Newham, Hounslow, Harrow and Richmond upon Thames.
10 days before
Last safe point for 7-day boroughs such as Hackney, Southwark, Barnet, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth, Hillingdon and Sutton. Send us the booking reference and bay location.
1 week before
Check the yellow warning signs are up and show the right dates. Ring the council if they are missing.
The day before
Move your own car out of the bays if it is in them. Note the council's enforcement number in case a car is parked there in the morning.
Moving day
Report any car in the suspended bays straight away. Display any notice the council sent, if it asks you to. If you finish early, some councils ask you to say so: Westminster asks domestic movers to put a "return to service" sticker on the sign.
Loading on yellow lines#
A suspension covers bays. Yellow lines work differently, and councils do not agree on the rules.
- Hackney says domestic removals can load or unload on single and double yellow lines without a suspension, but loading must be continuous and last no more than 40 minutes. Longer than that needs a suspension or dispensation.
- Islington says clearly branded removal vehicles can park on a single yellow line or in a resident bay for as long as needed, if loading is continuous and no other loading restriction applies. Unliveried vehicles can park the same way from midnight on the moving day until 11am, then up to 40 minutes at a time. AFS vans carry no livery, so the 11am rule applies to them: for a longer load, a bay suspension is the safe option. Islington cannot suspend yellow lines.
- Camden says there is an exemption when a vehicle is continuously engaged in a property move, but a suspension makes it more likely a space will be free.
- Tower Hamlets offers a dispensation to wait or load on a single yellow line, or double yellow lines in special cases, only where there is no alternative parking. Allow at least three working days. For a dispensation, residents pay a £100 administration charge plus £90 per space per day, with a £45 surcharge for diesel vehicles.
- Hounslow offers a yellow line waiver at £65 for one vehicle for one day, plus £25 per additional day. Merton charges £36.75 per vehicle per day for a single yellow line waiver. Wandsworth lists £59.40 per 5-metre space per day for a yellow line waiver, subject to approval. Southwark charges £53.15 per day for a waiting restriction dispensation. Bexley charges £25 per vehicle per day, or £125 per week, for a yellow line dispensation to load.
- City of London offers a dispensation to stand on a single yellow line (double yellow only in special cases) beyond the 40-minute loading limit. It costs £36 a day, or £40 with under 3 working days' notice. It is not available where kerb markings ban loading, and there is no loading at dropped kerbs. You may get a penalty charge if loading is not continuous or the vehicle is left unattended, and the original dispensation must be displayed. City suspensions apply 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Two practical points. First, the word that matters in every rule is continuous. If the crew stop loading, the exemption stops too. Second, kerb markings that ban loading still apply, and nothing above covers zig-zags, crossings or bus stops. If you are unsure, book a bay suspension or a dispensation rather than relying on an exemption.
Red routes#
Red routes are run by Transport for London, not the borough. Haringey says it does not suspend red routes and that requests go to TfL. Islington says it is not responsible for suspensions on red routes. If either address faces a red route, contact TfL well before moving day and tell us when you book, so we can plan where the van can legally stop.
Road charges are a separate question. Our vans meet ULEZ standards, so you are never charged for ULEZ. If either address is inside the Congestion Charge zone during charging hours, the charge is added as its own line on your quote. Our guide to the Congestion Charge and ULEZ for a moving van has the detail.
What it does to your quote#
A parking suspension costs you money, but it usually saves more. The crew are paid by the hour, and a van parked at the door means less carrying. Without one, the crew may have to circle for a space or carry everything from further away, and both add time. Our guide to London house removal costs shows how time, crew and vehicle size add up.
When you ask for a quote, say whether you have a suspension, a dispensation or neither at each address. Send a photo of the street if parking is tight. That lets us plan the right vehicle and gives you a more accurate figure.
