Key takeaways

The short version
  • Our Luton Box Van holds 700 cu ft, which our rate card describes as a typical one-bedroom home. It costs £100 an hour with two movers, with a 3-hour minimum and £1.80 a mile.
  • A Luton with two movers is the combination booked most often in our confirmed jobs: 22 of 75 records, written exactly that way.
  • The 5.5 Tonne Lorry holds 300 cu ft more for £30 an hour more with two movers and the same 3-hour minimum. Once a load is clearly over 700 cu ft, the lorry is the next step, not a squeeze.
  • A box van is tall. One manufacturer's Luton stands 3.15 m high, and a Network Rail guide for drivers says it is an offence to drive a vehicle over 3 metres high without its height shown in the cab. Low bridges are the driver's job to know, not yours.
  • It is also long: the same Luton is 6.84 m overall, so on a street where councils count a space as 5 metres it needs 2 spaces, before room for the doors or a tail-lift.

The Luton is the van most London home moves end up in. It is big enough for a one-bedroom flat in one trip, small enough to get down most residential streets. It is also the vehicle people know least about: they have seen the box over the cab a thousand times, but not what it holds, what it costs with two people or three, or why it needs more of the kerb than a panel van.

This guide is about the Luton itself. It sets out its load space and what that means in a home, its price at every crew size from our rate card, where it stops being the right vehicle and a lorry takes over, and what a tall, long box van meets on London streets: low bridges, parking bays and the loading itself. If you are still choosing between a Transit and a Luton, our guide to what fits in a Transit van compares the vans side by side, with real job volumes; this one picks up where that leaves off.

What is a Luton van, and how big is ours?#

A Luton is a box van: a van cab and chassis with a square, rigid box body behind it, and a section of the box that reaches forward over the cab. That forward part is what makes it a Luton. The box has straight sides, a flat floor and a near-square cross-section, so it packs like a room rather than like a tapering panel van. Renault, one of the manufacturers that sells one in the UK, describes it on its Master box van page as an "integrated luton head with shelf in cargo area".

Ours is on the rate card as the Luton Box Van, with a load space of up to 700 cu ft. The card's own description is short: "Up to 700 cu ft: 1 to 2 bedrooms." That one line is the most useful thing to know about it. It is the van between our Transits and our lorries, and it is the first vehicle on the card that is sized for a whole home rather than part of one.

To give a sense of the shape, here is the published size of one manufacturer's Luton. These are Renault's figures for its Luton box van with a tail-lift. They are an example of what the body type looks like in numbers, not the measurements of our own vans, which vary by model and body builder.

Renault Master Luton box van, as published

Load volume, about 706 cu ft
20 m³
Cargo length
4.07 m
Cargo height
2.20 m
Overall height
3.15 m

Two things in those numbers matter for a move. The cargo height of 2.20 m means a wardrobe, a fridge freezer or a tall bookcase can usually travel upright, which a lower panel van often cannot manage. And the overall height of 3.15 m and length of 6.84 m are what make a Luton different to drive and park in London, which is the second half of this guide. Renault also lists a Luton low loader version at 2.82 m overall height, with a lower floor and the same body idea.

What does 700 cubic feet hold in a real home?#

Our quote form suggests a Luton Box Van for a one-bedroom home, a flat or small house, and moves up to the 5.5 Tonne Lorry for two bedrooms. That suggestion is drawn from the load space, not a fixed rule, and you can choose a different vehicle. In practice a 700 cu ft load is the contents of a one-bedroom home with its usual furniture: a double or king-size bed and mattress, a wardrobe and chest of drawers, a sofa and armchair, a dining table and chairs, the kitchen appliances if they are yours, and the boxes that come out of the cupboards.

Our booking records include a recorded volume for a few jobs booked in a single Luton: 700 cu ft (1-bedroom flat plus a storage unit, long distance, Jul 2026); 750 cu ft (home move across cambridge, Jul 2025); and 700–800 cu ft (large furniture items, Oct 2024). They sit on or just over the 700 cu ft line, which is the point: a Luton is the van for a home that is full but not large, and the loads in those records were planned to fill it, with little to spare. Those volumes were estimated from each customer's inventory before the day, under our earlier booking practice.

What changes a Luton load is rarely the bedroom. It is the living room furniture, a home office, a garden, the loft and the boxes. A one-bedroom flat with a big corner sofa, a desk and two bookcases of books can run over 700 cu ft; a sparsely furnished two-bedroom flat can come under it. The comparison of each van's space against real homes, bedroom by bedroom, is set out in what fits in a Transit van, so it is not repeated here. The short version for a Luton: send the list and the photos, and we will tell you whether it fits or whether the lorry is the safer choice.

Where a Luton is the wrong van

  • A few items or a single room. A Luton's 3-hour minimum is an hour more than the Transits'. For a sofa, a bed or a student room, the Transit LWB or smaller usually costs less
  • A full two-bedroom home. Our quote form goes to the 5.5 Tonne Lorry for two bedrooms. Splitting a two-bedroom home across two Luton runs adds driving, waiting and parking twice
  • Very long items. A Luton's floor is long, but it is not a lorry's. A long sectional sofa or a very large dining table may decide the vehicle on its own, so measure it

What a Luton costs at every crew size#

Every vehicle on our rate card has an hourly rate for four crew sizes, and the Luton Box Van is no different: £70 an hour with driver only, £100 an hour with 2 movers, £130 an hour with 3 movers, £160 an hour with 4 movers. Each rate covers the van and the people. Mileage is £1.80 a mile on top. The clock starts when the team arrives at your collection address, the time is rounded up to the next half hour, and it is never charged below 3 hours.

The grid below works those rates through for every number of hours a Luton job usually books, from the minimum to a long day. It shows labour only, so you can see how the crew size and the hours each move the price before mileage and anything specific to your addresses.

What a Luton costs, by crew and hours

Labour only, before mileage at £1.80 a mile. The first row is the 3-hour minimum: a shorter job costs the same. Darker means dearer.

8 hours£560£800£1,040£1,280

Outlined: 2 movers, the crew booked most often with a Luton in our records.

Hourly rates: driver only £70, 2 movers £100, 3 movers £130, 4 movers £160. Time runs from the team's arrival and is rounded up to the half hour. Stairs, evenings and Sundays add their own lines.

Three things stand out. First, the minimum is real money: a Luton job that takes two hours still costs £210 with a driver only and £300 with two movers, because it is charged at 3 hours. Second, each extra mover adds £30 an hour to the first step and £30 to each step after it, so a four-person crew on an eight-hour day costs £1,280 in labour against £800 for two. Third, the hours move the price more than anything else: the difference between a 4 hours and a 6 hours job with two movers is £200.

Evenings add 15% to the hourly rate and Sundays and bank holidays 20%, so two movers in a Luton become £115 an hour on an evening and £120 on a Sunday. Saturdays carry no surcharge. The rest of the rate card, with every vehicle, is on our pricing page, and how the hours are counted is explained in full in our man and van price guide.

The combination people book most: a Luton and two movers#

Across our confirmed bookings, the Luton Box Van with two movers is the single combination booked most often: 22 of the 75 jobs in our records, from December 2023 to September 2026, were written exactly that way. The records come from one mailbox, so moves booked by phone or WhatsApp are not counted, and they describe what is typical rather than a market share. Luton vans appear, alone or in pairs, in 44 of the 75 records.

It is easy to see why. A Luton holds a typical one-bedroom home, and two people can carry everything in it, including a sofa and a wardrobe, without a third person standing idle on the short jobs. Our quote form makes the same suggestion: for a one-bedroom home it proposes the Luton Box Van with 2 movers, and 4 hours of loading and unloading in total.

Here is what that most-booked combination costs on a one-bedroom move at three distances inside London, priced with the same arithmetic as our quote form. Ground floor at both ends, on a weekday, with no London road or parking lines.

Distance between homesDriving time countedHours chargedLabourMileageTotal before extras
3 miles15 min4 hr 30 min£450£5.40£455.40
8 miles15 min4 hr 30 min£450£14.40£464.40
15 miles30 min4 hr 30 min£450£27£477

The distance barely moves it. Going from 3 to 15 miles across London adds £21.60, most of it the extra driving time at £100 an hour. What moves a Luton bill in London is the time at each address: stairs, the walk from the van to the door, a lift that has to be shared, and the boxes that were not packed. Those are the lines to look at in any quote.

Two movers or three on a Luton?#

For a full 700 cu ft load, our quote form's starting point is 3 movers, with 2 hours of loading and 2 hours of unloading. For a one-bedroom home, it suggests 2 movers. Both are defaults that you can change, and the right answer depends on the time a third person saves.

The arithmetic is simple. Three movers cost £130 an hour against £100 for two, so a third person only pays for themselves if the job finishes sooner by enough to cover the difference. The table below shows, for jobs of different lengths, how quickly three movers would need to finish to cost no more than two. The hours are rounded down to the half hour, as a quote would charge them.

Job with 2 moversCosts3 movers must finish withinTime they must save
5 hours£5003 hr 30 min (£455)1 hr 30 min
6 hours£6004 hr 30 min (£585)1 hr 30 min
7 hours£7005 hours (£650)2 hours

So on a 6 hours two-person job, three movers have to save 1 hr 30 min to break even. That is realistic when the work splits three ways: one person in the van stacking while two carry, or two carrying a heavy item while the third keeps the boxes moving. It is not realistic on a short ground-floor job, where the third person is waiting for the stairs to clear.

When a third mover usually earns their place

  • Stairs at either end. On the stairs, two people carry the furniture while the third keeps the van loaded. Note that stairs are charged per person: from the first floor up, £10 per person, per flight, per hour at that address, so on a third floor two movers add £120 an hour and three add £180
  • A long carry. When the van is a few doors away, every trip is a walk, and three people make more trips an hour
  • Heavy or awkward items. A large wardrobe, a range cooker or an American fridge freezer can need three people on it at once
  • A deadline. Completion day, a lift booked for a set window, or a parking suspension that ends at a fixed time all reward a faster crew

When two is enough

  • Ground floor or a lift that takes the furniture at both ends
  • The van can stop right outside
  • Everything is packed and the beds are already apart
  • A part-full Luton rather than a full one

If you are not sure, tell us the floors and the distance from the kerb at each end. The written quote names the crew and the hours, and you can ask us to price it both ways.

When do you need a 5.5 tonne lorry instead?#

The next vehicle up on our rate card is the 5.5 Tonne Lorry. Here the three vehicles that cover most whole-home moves sit side by side, with the price of space worked out per 100 cubic feet for two movers.

Load spaceMinimum2 movers3 moversPer milePer 100 cu ft, per hour (2 movers)Our quote form's suggestion
Luton Box Van700 cu ft3 hours£100£130£1.80£14.291-bedroom
5.5 Tonne Lorry1,000 cu ft3 hours£130£160£2.00£132-bedroom
7.5 Tonne Lorry1,300 cu ft3 hours£150£180£2.40£11.543-bedroom house

The step from a Luton to the 5.5 Tonne Lorry is smaller than people expect. It holds 300 cu ft more, about 43% extra, for £30 an hour more with two movers and the same 3-hour minimum. Per 100 cubic feet, the lorry is actually the cheaper space: £13 an hour against the Luton's £14.29. Mileage is the one line where the Luton clearly wins, at £1.80 a mile against £2.00, which adds up on a long move out of London.

The signs you have outgrown a Luton

  • Two bedrooms with their furniture. Our quote form suggests the 5.5 Tonne Lorry for any two-bedroom home
  • A load estimated at or over 700 cu ft. A Luton packed to the last cubic foot is slow to load and leaves no room for the things that appear on the day
  • A second trip would be needed. In our earlier records, 7 jobs were booked with two or more Luton vans. Today our quote form sizes the vehicle by volume, and the lorries start where a single Luton ends

A lorry is a bigger vehicle in London too. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes fall under the Low Emission Zone rather than ULEZ, which our guide to London road charges for moving day explains, and a longer vehicle needs more kerb. If the street is narrow or the parking is tight, say so, and we will plan the vehicle around it.

Can you drive a Luton on a car licence?#

Whether a car licence covers a van depends on the van's weight, not its body type. GOV.UK's licence categories page says a category B licence, for a test passed on or after 1 January 1997, covers vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500kg for petrol and diesel, or 4,250kg for zero-emission electric or hydrogen vehicles. Category C1 covers vehicles between 3,500kg and 7,500kg. GOV.UK's van guidance adds that drivers who passed after 1 January 1997 might need extra tests to drive vehicles in that heavier band.

So the question for any hired Luton is what its plate says. Check the maximum authorised mass on the van itself, not the hire company's description. Our 5.5 Tonne Lorry and 7.5 Tonne Lorry sit in the C1 weight band by their names, which is one reason a professional crew, not a self-drive hire, is the usual way to move a two- or three-bedroom home.

Weight matters inside the licence too. GOV.UK warns that a van's performance and safety are affected if it or its individual axles are overloaded, and that exceeding the maximum permitted axle weight can mean a fine of up to £300 or a court summons. A Luton full of books and kitchenware reaches its weight limit long before its box is full, which is why heavy things go in small boxes.

How tall is a Luton, and what does that mean for London's low bridges?#

A box van is much taller than a panel van, and that is the first thing a Luton driver has to think about in London. Renault's Luton box van stands 3.15 m overall, and its low loader 2.82 m. Other makes and body builders differ, so the only figure that counts is the one for the van on the day.

Network Rail's good practice guide for professional drivers, published on GOV.UK, sets out the rules that matter. Its first three responsibilities are to know your vehicle's height and width, know your route, and obey traffic signs. It says that most bridge strikes happen where roads pass under railway bridges, and that a driver commits an offence if the vehicle's overall travelling height is over 3 metres and the correct maximum height is not displayed in the cab. On Renault's published figures, its Luton box van is over that line.

What the signs mean

  • Height limits are signed where a bridge is lower than 16ft 3in (4.95 metres). Below that, signs show the maximum permitted vehicle height
  • Red circles prohibit; red triangles warn. A vehicle higher than the figure on a circular sign must stop and must not pass it. The guide says a vehicle higher than a triangular sign's figure should not pass it either
  • Arch bridges are lower at the edges. White lines on the road and "goal posts" on the arch can mark where the signed height applies, normally over a 3 metre width, and the guide tells drivers to pass between them
  • Not every low bridge has an advance warning. The guide says advance warning signs are not provided at all low bridges, so the route has to be known before the van sets off

The guide also warns against car sat navs, which it says will not avoid low bridges, and against short cuts that save time but lead to a low bridge. If a bridge is struck, it says to phone the number on the bridge's identification plate so that trains can be stopped, then call 999.

On a move with us, the van and its route are our job, not yours. The height matters to you in two cases: if you are hiring a Luton to drive yourself, and when the address has its own height limit.

Height limits at the address

Bridges are not the only low roof. Underground car parks, covered loading bays, gated archways into a mews or courtyard and some new-build service yards have their own clearance, and a Luton that stands over 3 metres tall may not fit. If your building has a loading bay or a basement entrance, ask the managing agent for its height and tell us before the day. If the van cannot get in, we plan for the street instead. Moving from a tower block or new build covers booking a loading bay and the building rules that come with it.

Why a Luton needs two parking spaces#

Length is the second thing a Luton brings to a London street. Renault's Luton box van is 6.84 m long overall. London councils sell suspensions by the space or bay, and some count a space as 5 metres: Wandsworth and Redbridge both price their waivers and suspensions per 5-metre space. On those numbers a Luton needs 2 spaces just for its own length, and more if it needs room behind to open the doors, lower a tail-lift or ramp, and give the crew somewhere to stand.

That changes what a suspension costs, because many councils charge per space. Here is what four councils published, read from their own pages on 3 November 2026. The customer applies to the council and pays its fee, and we plan the van and crew around the booking.

CouncilNoticeCost as the council publishes it
Camden17 days advised. 3 days minimum£66.66 admin + £79.63 per space for 1 day. Moving home: first-day space charge waived for up to 3 spaces
Tower Hamlets7 working days (payment received by then)£200 service charge + £90 per bay per day. Moving house: no bay charge for up to 2 bays for 1 day
Southwark7 days£93 admin + £53.15 per space per day
Westminster10 working daysDay 1 £51 per space (zones A, C, D) or £55 (zones B, E, F, G), more from day 2. Plus a £20 short notice admin fee if booked within 10 calendar days

On Southwark's published fees, 2 spaces for one day come to £199.30: £93 admin and £53.15 for each space. Camden and Tower Hamlets both reduce the space charge for a home move on the first day, for up to three and two spaces respectively, which covers a Luton's length. Westminster charges per space from the first day. Rules and fees change, so check the council's page before you apply; our parking suspension finder lists 31 councils.

For a short Luton job, a suspension can cost more than it saves. Some councils allow a removal van to load on a yellow line or in a resident bay while loading is continuous, and parking suspensions for moving day sets out which boroughs say what. The rule of thumb for a Luton is simple: if the street has no gap of 2 spaces outside your door on a normal weekday, plan for a suspension.

How should a Luton be loaded?#

GOV.UK's van guidance gives the basics for any van: load evenly throughout the cargo area with the heaviest items at the bottom, do not overload the individual axles, and secure the load with restraints such as netting and straps. It warns that some vans have no bulkhead, so an unsecured load can end up in the cab in a collision. The general loading order for a home move is in our Transit van guide; a Luton adds three things of its own.

Loading a Luton, front to back

  1. The tall, heavy pieces first

Wardrobes, the fridge freezer and tall bookcases stand upright against the front wall of the box, behind the cab, strapped. The box's full height is used here.

  2. The shelf over the cab

The Luton head takes light, flat or soft things: bedding, cushions, lampshades, pictures in their wrapping. Nothing heavy goes up there.

  3. Mattresses and bed frames

Upright along the sides, in covers, so the floor stays free for furniture.

  4. The sofa and tables

Wrapped, in the middle, with nothing heavy resting on them.

  5. Boxes in tiers

Heavy boxes low, light boxes high, each tier strapped as it is finished.

  6. The last-needed items

By the door, so the kettle, bedding and tools come off first.

Tail-lift or ramp?

Some Lutons have a tail-lift, a powered platform at the back that raises heavy items to the floor of the box, and some do not. Renault, for example, sells its Luton box van with and without one. Whether a particular van has a tail-lift is a question about that van, so if it matters for your move, for a heavy appliance, a piano or a large safe, ask us when you book. One of our earlier booking records lists Luton vans with tail-lifts, but the vehicle for your move is confirmed in your written quote.

Where a Luton is easier than a panel van

The straight walls and the extra height make a Luton faster to load well than a van the same size with sloping sides. Furniture stands against the walls without leaning, boxes stack in square tiers, and wardrobes travel upright instead of on their backs. That is part of why a Luton's 2 hours of default loading time holds a whole one-bedroom home.

What our earlier Luton jobs in London looked like#

These are real Luton bookings to or from London from our records, anonymised to the area. The prices are what customers paid at the time, under our earlier pricing, which priced a job as a time slot with any overtime extra, so read them for the vehicle, crew and time London Luton jobs needed, not as today's rates. Miles in our records are straight-line distances between postcodes and are not used here.

A few patterns are clear. 11 of these 13 jobs were booked with two movers. Moves within London were mostly booked for three and a half to five hours; the longest slots went out of London to Nottingham and Norwich, where the driving takes over from the carrying, or were a boxes-only job with three movers. The job type is not only home moves either: two office moves used the same van, because a Luton's box suits anything that is mostly furniture and boxes. And the largest job here, a two-bedroom flat over two days, was booked as a 7.5-tonne lorry or two Lutons, the kind of load our quote form now sizes as a lorry.

What comes with every Luton move#

Whichever crew you book with the Luton, every move with us includes the same basics:

  • Goods in Transit cover. Included on every move, not sold as an add-on.
  • Public Liability cover. In place on every job, at home or at work.
  • Our own crew. Every mover is employed by AFS. We never pass your move to a subcontractor.
  • One named coordinator. Your single point of contact, from the quote to the last box.

Packing materials are not included in the hourly rate. The crew brings what the job needs, and the materials are itemised in your quote. We do not hoist furniture through windows: anything that will not fit the stairs, the lift or the van door is taken apart instead, and dismantling is priced per item as part of a removal.

  5. Confirm and book

A 20% deposit secures the date. The team confirms the final price in writing before the move.

For a one-bedroom flat or a large part-load, start from our man and van in London page, which lists the Luton Box Van with its rates for every crew size. For a two-bedroom home or larger, our house removals in London page covers the lorries on the same rate card. If you cannot tell which side of 700 cu ft your home falls, send the list anyway: the London house removals team sizes every move from the inventory, and will tell you if the Luton is too small before it is on your street.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Luton van hold?
Our Luton Box Van holds up to 700 cu ft, which our rate card describes as a typical one-bedroom home. As an example of the body type, Renault publishes 20 m³ (about 706 cu ft) for its Luton box van, with a cargo area 4.07 m long and 2.20 m high.
How much is a Luton van with two movers in London?
£100 an hour with us, with a 3-hour minimum (£300) and £1.80 a mile. A one-bedroom move of 8 miles comes to about £464.40 before stairs, parking or road charges. With a driver only it is £70 an hour, with three movers £130.
Is a Luton or a 5.5 tonne lorry better for a two-bedroom flat?
Usually the lorry. Our quote form suggests the 5.5 Tonne Lorry (1,000 cu ft) for two bedrooms. It costs £30 an hour more than a Luton with two movers, has the same 3-hour minimum, and avoids a second trip. A sparsely furnished two-bedroom flat can fit a Luton, so send the list and we will say.
Can I drive a Luton van on a car licence?
Only if its maximum authorised mass is no more than 3,500kg (4,250kg for a zero-emission electric or hydrogen vehicle), according to GOV.UK. Vehicles between 3,500kg and 7,500kg need category C1. Check the weight on the van's own plate.
Will a Luton van fit under low bridges in London?
Not always. One manufacturer's Luton is 3.15 m tall. Network Rail's guide for drivers says height limits are signed at bridges lower than 16ft 3in (4.95 metres), but not every low bridge has an advance warning, and car sat navs will not avoid them. Tell us about any height limit at your address.
How many parking spaces does a Luton need?
Usually 2. One manufacturer's Luton is 6.84 m long, and councils such as Wandsworth and Redbridge count a space as 5 metres, before room behind for the doors or a tail-lift. You apply to the council for a suspension and pay its fee.
