Moving out of London combines the hardest parts of two moves. The collection is a London job, with stairs, permits and tight streets. The delivery is a long-distance one, where the van cannot pop back for a forgotten box.

What real moves out of London cost#

These are home moves we have booked from a London address to somewhere outside London. They show the area and month only, The price is what the customer was quoted at the time, under our earlier pricing, and the miles are measured in a straight line, so the road distance is longer.

MonthRouteStraight-line milesJobTime bookedPrice at the time
Oct 2024South Kensington to Sheffield140Furniture moveUp to 5 hours£550
Jul 2026Barking to Beeston, Nottingham1111-bedroom flat plus a storage unit, long distanceUp to 8 hours£850
Jul 2026Stoke Newington to Norwich95Long-distance home moveUp to 7 hours£795
Sept 2024Streatham to Chesham29Home moveUp to 5 hours£420

Price follows two things: how much is moving, and how far. A small flat going a long way can cost less than a large house going a short way, because the time spent loading can outweigh the miles.

A worked example#

This uses today's rate card for a 2-bedroom home over 150 road miles, with the vehicle and crew our quote form suggests. It assumes ground-floor access at both ends and a weekday.

Part of the quoteHow it is worked outAmount
Time allowedLoading and unloading 6 hours + driving 2 hr 30 min, rounded up to 8 hr 30 minSet in the quote
Labour8 hr 30 min × £160 (5.5 Tonne Lorry, 3 movers)£1,360
Mileage150 miles × £2.00 a mile£300
Estimated totalLabour + mileage£1,660

This is arithmetic on the published rates, not a quote. Stairs, packing, dismantling and the Congestion Charge (if your London address is inside the zone in charging hours) are added only when your move needs them. The team confirms the final price in writing.

On a route like this, any tolls are passed on at cost. Ask whether an overnight stay is needed, and make sure the answer is in your written quote.

Sorting out the London end#

The London end is planned exactly as a move within the city, so our London house removals page applies to it: the same rate card, stairs and parking rules.

Most delays on a move out of London happen before the van leaves. Deal with these early:

Timing the move#

Leaving London early in the day is usually easier than leaving in the evening, because the crew need daylight at the far end to unload. A large home over a long distance may be planned across two days. How to plan a long-distance house move explains the drivers' hours rules and what a long day can look like.

If you are buying, keys at the new home may not be released until the afternoon. Plan an arrival window rather than a fixed time, and agree one contact at each end.

Bigger home, smaller budget?#

Many people leaving London move somewhere larger. The move itself is priced on what you own now, not what the new house could hold, so a clear-out before the move saves money twice: less to load in London, and less to carry at the other end.

If there is a gap between leaving London and getting into the new home, storage can bridge it. We arrange storage through a partner, and a recent one-bedroom example was £250–£350 a month.

After you arrive#

Getting a quote#

Send both postcodes, your date, a room-by-room list, and the stairs and parking at both addresses. You will get an itemised written quote within 24 hours. Start from our house removals in London page, or build an estimate.

Eight weeks out: decide what is coming with you#

Moving out of London often means more space at the other end, and that tempts people to bring everything. Before you ask for a quote, walk through each room and sort it into three groups: coming, going before the move, and not sure. The "not sure" pile is the one that costs money, because it is priced into the van and the hours whether you use it or not.

A good test is whether you would pay to move an item twice. If it went into a London cupboard and has not come out for two years, it probably does not need to travel 150 miles. Sell or give away the extras early, while you still have time to arrange collections. We move what you keep, but we do not take away rubbish or unwanted furniture, so anything you are not keeping needs to be gone before moving day.

Once the list is settled, measure the big pieces you are keeping and check them against the new home. A house outside London may have wider stairs than your flat, but a cottage or a converted barn can have low beams and tight turns of its own. Sofa won't fit up the stairs? explains how to measure.

Leaving your London borough: the admin#

London boroughs each run their own council tax, parking and permit services, so you deal with your old borough and your new council separately. Do the London side before you lose track of the paperwork.

Council tax

Tell your London borough the date you are leaving and your new address, so it can send the final bill. Southwark, for example, says you must let it know within 21 days of a change, and asks for your moving dates, whether you own or rent, and the names of everyone aged 18 or over at the property. Hackney asks for your account number, your move-out date and your new address, and its final bill shows whether you owe money or are in credit. If you are in credit, you can apply for a refund.

At the new home, register with the new council from the day you move in. If you will live there on your own, GOV.UK says you get 25% off the bill. You have to apply for it, so ask when you register.

Resident parking permits

A resident permit does not travel with you, and it is worth cancelling rather than letting it run out. Boroughs refund unused time in different ways:

  • Islington refunds the full months left on a permit you no longer need, minus a £32.80 admin fee, and says refunds can take up to 28 days
  • Lambeth works out an e-permit refund on the full calendar days left, minus £5.14 per permit, and gives no refund if what is owed is the same as or less than that fee

These were the figures on each council's page on 5 November 2026. Check the current fee on your own borough's website before you cancel. Visitor permits and vouchers you have bought may follow separate rules.

Moving day parking at both ends

You may need a parking suspension in London, and the town you are moving to may have its own permit zones. Ask the new council how a removal van can load outside the new address, and whether a dispensation or suspension is needed there too. Parking suspension or dispensation? explains the difference in London.

Road charges on the way out#

The route out of London can cross charged roads. The Congestion Charge is covered in the guide above. On longer routes the one most people meet is the Dartford Crossing, used by many moves heading to Kent, Essex and beyond.

GOV.UK says you usually pay the Dartford Crossing charge if you cross between 6am and 10pm, including weekends and bank holidays, and the charge must be paid by midnight the day after you cross. Tolls on your route are passed on at cost, so they appear as a line on your quote rather than as a markup. If your route crosses Dartford, ask for the toll line to be shown in your written quote so you know it has been allowed for.

Registering in your new area#

Some things are easy to forget because nothing goes wrong until you need them.

  • GP. The NHS says most people need to register with a GP near where they live. Most surgeries offer online registration, which takes about 15 minutes per person, and you do not need proof of address or ID. You do not need to tell your old surgery, because it is told automatically. A surgery can refuse if it is not taking new patients or you live outside its area, and it must write to you within 14 days to say why
  • Electoral register. GOV.UK says you need to register again when you change address. It usually takes about 5 minutes online
  • Schools. In England, contact the council where you will live about state school places and their admission rules. Do this as early as you can if you are moving mid-year
  • Dentist, vet and prescriptions. Find new ones before you run out of anything. A repeat prescription is easier to sort before the move than after

Gas, electricity and your final bills#

Citizens Advice says to give your energy supplier at least 48 hours' notice that you are moving out, read the meters on the day you leave, and give a forwarding address for the final bill. You then have 28 days to pay it. If you are on a fixed tariff, check whether there is an exit fee, or whether you can take the tariff with you.

At the new home, read the meters on the day you move in and tell the supplier there that you have arrived. You will usually start on that supplier's standard tariff, and you can only switch from the day you become responsible for the property. If the new home has a prepayment meter, contact the supplier before you top up, so you do not pay the last occupant's debt.

Citizens Advice also says your old supplier should send the final bill within 6 weeks, and any credit should be refunded within 10 working days of the final bill. Photograph the meters at both homes with the date showing. Meter readings and utilities covers water and broadband as well.

Packing for a long drive#

On a local move, a missing kettle is a nuisance. On a move out of London, the van may arrive hours after you, and anything packed in the wrong place is out of reach until the far end. Pack with that in mind:

  • Keep with you: keys for both homes, phone chargers, medication, documents for the purchase or tenancy, payment cards, and anything valuable or irreplaceable
  • Load last, unload first: bed frames and bedding, the kettle and mugs, a toilet roll, basic tools and cleaning things
  • Label for the new house, not the old flat: mark each box with the room it is going to at the far end, especially if the new home has more rooms than the old one
  • Seal everything: boxes travel further and are stacked higher on a long run, so tape the bottom and top, and do not overfill

Your moving day essentials bag has a fuller list, and labelling boxes for unpacking shows a system that works at the far end.

Arriving at the new home#

Plan the delivery end as carefully as the collection. Send us the new address with any access notes: a long drive, a gravel path, a gate code, a narrow lane, or a low bridge on the approach. Rural roads can be harder for a large vehicle than a London street, so photos of the approach help.

Be there before the van, if you can. Walk the rooms, put a sign on each door matching your box labels, and decide where the big items go before they come off. The crew can then place each piece once, instead of moving it twice while you decide. If you are buying and keys may be late, read what happens if you have no keys on moving day before the day.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to move out of London?
It depends on how much you are moving and how far. On the rate card, a 2-bedroom home over 150 miles comes to about £1,660 before stairs or extras.
Can a move out of London be done in one day?
Many can. A large home over a long distance may be planned across two days, because of loading time and drivers' hours. Ask how your crew's day has been planned.
Do I pay ULEZ when moving out of London?
Not with us. Our vans meet the ULEZ standard, so you are never charged it. The Congestion Charge is added as its own line only if your London address is inside the zone during charging hours.
Do I need to tell my London council I am moving out?
Yes. Tell your borough your move date and new address so it can send the final council tax bill. Southwark, for example, asks to be told within 21 days. If the final bill shows you are in credit, you can apply for a refund.
Can I get a refund on my resident parking permit when I leave London?
Usually, for the unused time, minus an admin fee. Islington refunds full months left minus £32.80, and Lambeth refunds full days left minus £5.14 per permit. Check your own borough's current fee.
Show all 8 questions
How are tolls like the Dartford Crossing charged on a move?
Tolls on your route are passed on at cost and shown as a line on the quote. GOV.UK says the Dartford charge usually applies from 6am to 10pm and must be paid by midnight the day after you cross.
When should I register with a new GP after moving out of London?
As soon as you have the new address. Most surgeries offer online registration, it takes about 15 minutes per person, and you do not need proof of address or ID. Your old surgery is told automatically.
What should I keep with me rather than in the van?
Keys for both homes, medication, phone chargers, purchase or tenancy documents, payment cards and anything valuable or irreplaceable. On a long move the van may arrive hours after you.
