A cheap London move is not about finding a low hourly rate. It is about paying for fewer hours. Most of the time on a London move is spent at the two doors, not on the road. Anything that makes loading and unloading faster saves money, and anything that slows it down costs money.
How the price is built#
Every move uses the same rate card: an hourly rate for the vehicle and the number of movers, plus a per-mile rate for the distance. There is a minimum booking, 2 hours on the smaller vans. No VAT is added. The full figure is confirmed in writing by our team, but the arithmetic is open, so you can see where the savings are.
| Vehicle | Driver only | 2 movers | Minimum booking | Per mile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small Transit (SWB) | £55 an hour | £75 an hour | 2 hours | £1.20 |
| Transit LWB | £60 an hour | £85 an hour | 2 hours | £1.40 |
| Luton Box Van | £70 an hour | £100 an hour | 3 hours | £1.80 |
| 5.5 Tonne Lorry | £100 an hour | £130 an hour | 3 hours | £2.00 |
| 7.5 Tonne Lorry | £120 an hour | £150 an hour | 3 hours | £2.40 |
| 10 Tonne Lorry | £140 an hour | £170 an hour | 3 hours | £2.80 |
| 12 Tonne Lorry | £160 an hour | £190 an hour | 3 hours | £3.20 |
| 18 Tonne Lorry | £180 an hour | £210 an hour | 3 hours | £3.60 |
Three levers move the total: the hours, the hourly rate (vehicle and crew) and the extras. The tips below work on each.
1. Pick the smallest van that fits#
A bigger van costs more an hour, more a mile, and can carry a longer minimum. On the rate card, the Transit LWB with two movers is £85 an hour with a 2-hour minimum. The Luton Box Van is £100 an hour with a 3-hour minimum.
For a 1-bedroom home moving 8 miles, our quote form suggests the Luton Box Van for 4 hr 30 min, about £464.40. If the load is light enough for the Transit LWB (up to 500 cu ft), the same move would come to about £393.70. The catch is that the smaller van must actually fit everything. A second trip costs more than the bigger van would have. That is why an accurate room-by-room list is the best way to save: it gets the right vehicle first time.
2. Book only the crew you need#
Driver-only rates are on the card for every vehicle. On the Small Transit (SWB), a driver only is £55 an hour, against £75 with two movers. On the studio flat example, the same 2 hr 30 min with a driver only would save £50 in labour.
Be honest about the load, though. A driver only means one person carrying. That suits boxes, a few pieces of furniture, or a move where you are happy to help. A sofa, a fridge freezer or a third-floor flat usually needs two people, and one person working alone can take longer. If the hours go up, the saving goes. Tell us what you want to carry yourself, and the quote is built on that.
Man and van or removal company helps you decide between a small van with a driver and a full crew.
3. Move on a weekday#
The day and time change the labour cost. An evening move adds 15%, and a Sunday or bank holiday 20%, on the removal labour. Here is the 1-bedroom home example again:
| Day and time | Labour | Surcharge | Mileage | Estimate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weekday | £450 | None | £14.40 | £464.40 |
| Evening | £450 | +15%, £67.50 | £14.40 | £531.90 |
| Sunday or bank holiday | £450 | +20%, £90 | £14.40 | £554.40 |
There is one London wrinkle. The Congestion Charge runs 07:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and 12:00 to 18:00 at weekends and on bank holidays. If either address is inside the zone, we add the charge as its own line. A Sunday morning or an evening move can avoid it, but our surcharge for those times may cost more than it saves. Compare both before you choose. Our vans meet the ULEZ standard, so you are never charged ULEZ.
4. Pack yourself#
Our packing service is useful when time is short, and the crew bring all the materials. It is priced as its own line, and for a one-bedroom home it is £400 with materials. It is only offered with a removal. If you have the time, packing yourself saves that line.
The saving only holds if you finish. A crew that arrives to half-packed rooms waits while you pack, and the hours run. Have everything sealed and labelled before the van arrives. Why moving day goes wrong when you are not fully packed explains why this matters.
5. Clear out before moving day#
Everything you do not move costs nothing to move. Sell, give away or recycle what you do not need, weeks before. For large unwanted items, book a bulky waste collection with your council yourself. On 3 November 2026, Hackney listed £24 for 1 to 5 items and Wandsworth £24.90 for up to 4. We do not take rubbish or clear waste, so unwanted items need to be gone before the crew arrive.
A smaller load can mean a smaller van, which is the biggest saving of all.
6. Get the parking right#
In London, the distance from the van to the door is paid for on every trip. If the nearest legal space is a long walk, every box takes longer. A parking suspension can put the van outside the door. You apply for it and pay the council. Fees vary widely, and Sutton charges nothing for a domestic removal suspension. Others charge an admin fee and a daily rate per space, so check yours early.
Visitor vouchers are not a shortcut. Hackney says they are not valid in suspended bays. Parking suspensions for moving day in London lists each borough's rules and fees.
7. Book the lift#
Stairs are charged from the first floor up, at £10 per person, per flight, per hour, with 2 flights to a floor. As an example, 2 movers working a third-floor flat adds £120 an hour. A working lift that takes the furniture means no stair charge, so book it with your building. Moving a flat in London covers what to ask.
8. Avoid waiting time#
Waiting time is £40 per crew member per hour, for example when keys are late. If you rent, line up the move with the check-out. If you are buying, avoid booking the crew before completion is likely. Moving out of a rented home in London covers the handover.
What does not cost extra#
- Short notice. There is no premium for a last-minute booking. Homes up to two bedrooms can often be moved the same day if booked by 2pm, subject to availability. See last-minute removals in London
- ULEZ. Our vans meet the standard, so it is never on your quote
There is no student discount. The same rate card applies to every move, which keeps it simple to compare. Student removals in London covers smaller moves.
Getting the cheapest quote#
Send both postcodes, your date, a room-by-room list, the floor and lift at each address, and where the van can stop. Say if you will pack yourself or help carry. You will get an itemised written quote within 24 hours, and the team confirms the final price. Start from our house removals in London page. How much house removals cost in London shows examples for every home size.
If the dates between homes do not line up, storing for a few days can cost less than paying a crew to wait. See removals and storage in London. For everything else, start at house removals in London.
The rest of the moving budget#
The removal is only one line in the cost of a London move, and often not the largest. The cheapest move is the one where the whole budget is planned, so that nothing arrives as a surprise in the last week. These are the other costs to put on the list:
| Cost | Who it applies to | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stamp Duty Land Tax | Buyers | GOV.UK SDLT rates and calculator |
| Legal and survey fees | Buyers and sellers | Your conveyancer's quote |
| Holding deposit, deposit and first rent | Renters | Your letting agent or landlord |
| Parking suspension | Anyone who needs the van outside | Your borough's website |
| Overlap in rent or council tax | Anyone with a gap between homes | Your tenancy and your council |
| Packing materials | Anyone packing themselves | Shops, or reused boxes |
| Storage | Anyone with a gap between homes | A storage quote |
Hidden costs of moving house in London goes through the less obvious ones in more detail.
Stamp duty if you are buying#
For most London buyers, Stamp Duty Land Tax is the largest single moving cost. GOV.UK gives the standard residential rates as 0% up to £125,000, 2% on the portion from £125,001 to £250,000, 5% from £250,001 to £925,000, 10% from £925,001 to £1.5 million and 12% above that. An extra 5% applies if you will own another home, and a 2% surcharge usually applies to non-UK residents.
First-time buyers pay 0% up to £300,000 and 5% on the portion from £300,001 to £500,000. There is no first-time buyer relief if the price is over £500,000, which matters in London, where many flats sit near that line. Use the GOV.UK calculator for your own figure, and check the current rates, because they change.
Council tax: avoid paying twice#
If your tenancy or sale overlaps with the new home, you may be liable for council tax at both for a short time. Tell both councils your exact dates, so that each bill starts and stops on the right day. Southwark, for example, asks to be told within 21 days of a move.
If you will live alone at the new home, GOV.UK says you get 25% off the council tax bill. It is not applied automatically, so apply when you register. It is one of the easiest savings of the whole move to miss.
Energy: small steps that save money#
Citizens Advice says to give your energy supplier at least 48 hours' notice before you move out, and to read the meters on the day you leave. Without readings, the final bill may be estimated, and you can end up paying for the next occupant's use. If you are on a fixed tariff, check for an exit fee before you move, and ask whether you can keep the tariff at the new home.
At the new home, read the meters as soon as you arrive. If there is a prepayment meter, contact the supplier before you top up, so you do not pay off the previous occupant's debt. Citizens Advice says any credit on your old account should be refunded within 10 working days of the final bill, so check that it arrives.
Packing materials for less#
Packing yourself saves the packing line on the quote, but the materials still cost something. Ways to keep that down:
- Ask friends who have moved recently for their boxes. Moving boxes usually survive two or three moves if they were not overfilled
- Use suitcases, laundry bags and drawers for clothes and soft things
- Wrap plates and glasses in towels, tea towels and bedding, which you are moving anyway
- Buy tape and a few sturdy boxes for books and kitchen items, where cheap boxes fail
- Do not use bin bags for anything heavy or breakable: they split, and they are hard to stack in a van
Strong boxes stack safely and load faster, which saves time on the day. A flimsy box that collapses under another costs more than it saved. Choosing moving boxes explains which sizes to use, and packing fragile items shows how to wrap without buying much.
False economies#
Some savings cost more than they save. The common ones in London:
- Hiring a van and driving it yourself looks cheap until you add fuel, insurance excess, parking, road charges and a day of your own time. DIY van hire or removals compares them honestly
- Skipping the parking suspension when there is no legal space nearby. A long carry adds hours, and a penalty charge notice adds more
- Booking too small a van to save on the hourly rate. A second trip costs more than the step up
- Booking too few movers for a flat up several flights. The stair charge is lower an hour, but the move takes longer
- Packing on the morning of the move. The crew wait while you finish, and waiting time is charged
- Moving things you will throw away later. Every box costs time to carry twice
When to book#
Booking early gives you the widest choice of dates, especially at month ends, when many London tenancies start and finish. Weekdays in the middle of the month are often easier to book. If your date is fixed by a completion, book once exchange is likely, and ask what happens if the date moves. How far ahead to book movers in London and the cheapest day to move house in London go into the timing.
