What a move in Tower Hamlets costs

Our rates are the same in Tower Hamlets as everywhere else we work, and they are never changed by postcode.

A quote is built from up to four parts, and each one is its own line in your written quote. Nothing else is added.

  1. An hourly rate for the vehicle and crew

From £75 an hour for a small van and two movers. Driving time between your two addresses is charged at the same rate.

  2. A per-mile charge

For the road distance between the address you are leaving and the one you are moving to, at the rate for your vehicle.

  3. Published extras, where they apply

Stairs without a lift, waiting time, dismantling, an evening or Sunday move, or the Congestion Charge inside the zone.

  4. Packing, if you want it

A whole-home package or just the breakables. Leave it out and you pack yourself.

Two worked examples

A 2-bedroom home, a local move of about 6 miles. A 5.5 Tonne Lorry with two movers is £160 an hour. Loading and unloading takes about 6 hours and the drive between the two addresses about 15 min, so 6 hr 30 min is booked: £1,040. Six miles at £2 adds £12, which comes to about £1,052 before any stairs, dismantling or packing.

The same home, 200 miles out of Tower Hamlets. The drive takes about 3 hr 15 min, so 9 hr 30 min is booked (£1,520), and 200 miles × £2 adds £400: about £1,920. A long-distance move is priced from the same rate card as a local one; it just has more miles on it.

Other charges that can apply

  • Stairs

£10 per person, per flight, per hour

From the first floor up, for the hours at that address. A floor is 2 flights, so a first floor with a two-person crew adds £40 an hour there. A working lift that takes furniture removes the charge.

  • Waiting time

    £40 per person, per hour

For example if the keys are released late on completion day: £80 an hour for a two-person crew.

  • Congestion Charge

TfL's daily charge inside the zone only

Added as its own line if either address is inside central London's Congestion Charge zone during charging hours. Our vans meet the ULEZ standard, so there is no ULEZ charge.

TfL: Congestion Charge zone and hours

The minimum booking is 2 hours for the Small Transit (SWB) and Transit LWB, and 3 hours for the Luton Box Van, 5.5 Tonne Lorry, 7.5 Tonne Lorry, 10 Tonne Lorry, 12 Tonne Lorry and 18 Tonne Lorry.

Council rules

What the council says about moving day in Tower Hamlets

Published by the authorities themselves, with a link to each. Rules and fees change, so check the source before you rely on them.

  1. Reserving space outside the property: Tower Hamlets Council

Tower Hamlets takes suspensions through an online form and needs 7 working days' notice, with payment received by then. The standard charge is a £200 service charge plus £90 per bay per day. Residents moving house can ask for a limited suspension with no bay charge for up to 2 bays for one day, though the service charge still applies. With AFS, you apply for and pay for any suspension yourself, then send us the booking reference and bay location so we can plan the van around it.

Stairs and lifts

Floors, lifts and the carry from the van

Tell us which floor each address is on and whether a lift takes furniture. Stairs are charged by the flight from the first floor up, and a working lift removes the charge. A long walk from the van, a narrow gate or a tight stairwell also changes the time a job takes.

Third floor6£120

£10 per person, per flight, per hour spent at that address, driver included. A crew of 2 spending one hour loading on a third floor (6 flights) adds £120. With a working lift that takes the furniture, the line is £0.

Extra help

Deciding how much help you need

Most moves need only a vehicle and a crew sized to the home. These are the situations where adding help usually saves time or reduces risk.

  • An extra mover

Worth it when there are stairs at both ends, a long carry from where the van can stop, or a tight window between collecting your keys and handing over your old ones.

For a Luton Box Van, a third mover takes the hourly rate from £100 to £130.

  • Packing

Worth it when you have less than a week, a lot of glass, china or artwork, or little time around work.

Packing packages include the materials: £400 for a 1-bedroom home, £600 for 2 bedrooms and £1,000 for 3. If you only want the breakables done, fragile-only packing covers glass, china, artwork and mirrors.

  • Dismantling and reassembly

Worth it when a bed, wardrobe or table will not pass through a stairwell or doorway in one piece.

A single or double bed is £50 to dismantle, or £90 to dismantle and rebuild; a standard two-door wardrobe is £60, or £110 with reassembly. Every dismantling booking has a £90 minimum.

  • Pianos, antiques and artwork

Worth it when an item is heavy, valuable or awkward enough to need extra wrapping and handling.

Priced for the item, after we know what it is and where it has to go.

  • Storage

Worth it when your new home is not ready on moving day, the dates do not line up, or you are downsizing and need somewhere for what does not fit yet.

We arrange secure storage near either address. Storage for a 1-bedroom flat's contents is £250 to £350 a month, VAT included, with the first month paid upfront; larger homes are priced on volume in your quote. Moving into and out of storage is priced like any other move.

How a move in Tower Hamlets works

Five steps, one coordinator, and a plan agreed before the van arrives.

    Get your written quote

An itemised quote within 24 hours, built from our published rates: vehicle, crew, hours and extras, line by line.

  3. 3

    Your coordinator takes over

Once you book, one named coordinator confirms the date, vehicle and crew, and stays your contact until the last box is in.

  4. 4

    Packed and loaded

Floors and doorways protected, furniture dismantled and blanket-wrapped, and the van loaded in the order you want it unloaded.

  5. 5

    Unloaded and rebuilt

Boxes go to the rooms you labelled, beds go back together, and the crew stays until you have walked the house.

Questions

Moving in Tower Hamlets: common questions

Do you cover all of Tower Hamlets?
Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets, across the E1, E2 and E1W postcode districts, including Whitechapel, Weavers, St Katharine's & Wapping and Stepney Green. A move from Tower Hamlets to Shoreditch or to the other end of the UK is priced from the same rate card.
How much does a move in Tower Hamlets cost?
The same as everywhere we work: our rates never change by postcode. For 2-bedroom home, the commonest size of home in Tower Hamlets, the labour guide is £780; the prices section above shows every size, and your itemised written quote arrives within 24 hours.
Do I need to arrange parking for moving day in Tower Hamlets?
Tower Hamlets takes suspensions through an online form and needs 7 working days' notice, with payment received by then. You apply for and pay for any suspension yourself, and tell us the bay when you book; the council's fees and link are in the council rules section.
What is included in a house move?
Goods in Transit and Public Liability cover, our own employed crew, and a named move coordinator who handles your job from the quote to the last box. The crew protects floors and doorways before anything moves, blanket-wraps furniture, and unloads boxes into the rooms you have labelled them for. Packing, packing materials, furniture dismantling and specialist handling have their own published prices, so you only pay for what you need.
How far in advance should I book?
As soon as you have a likely date, even if completion is not confirmed. Fridays and month-ends go first, so an early conversation gives you more choice. If you are working to a short deadline, call anyway: homes up to two bedrooms can often be moved the same day if you book by 2pm, and larger homes usually the next day, subject to availability. There is no extra charge for short notice. Phone lines are open seven days a week, 8:00am – 10:30pm.
Do I need to pack everything myself?
No. You can pack everything yourself, have us pack the whole property, or have us pack only the fragile items. Whichever you choose, we bring the boxes, tape and wrap with us and itemise them in your quote. If you are packing yourself, the single most useful thing you can do is label each box with the room it is going to at the new address rather than the room it came from — that is what makes room-by-room unloading work at the other end.
