Other charges that can apply

  • Stairs

£10 per person, per flight, per hour

From the first floor up, for the hours at that address. A floor is 2 flights, so a first floor with a two-person crew adds £40 an hour there. A working lift that takes furniture removes the charge.

  • Congestion Charge

TfL's daily charge inside the zone only

Added as its own line if either address is inside central London's Congestion Charge zone during charging hours. Our vans meet the ULEZ standard, so there is no ULEZ charge.

The minimum booking is 2 hours for the Small Transit (SWB) and Transit LWB, and 3 hours for the Luton Box Van, 5.5 Tonne Lorry, 7.5 Tonne Lorry, 10 Tonne Lorry, 12 Tonne Lorry and 18 Tonne Lorry.

To get an itemised quote, send us both addresses, the floor and lift situation at each, where the van can stop, and what the job involves. Your quote arrives in writing within 24 hours.

Man & Van by AFS Removals

The service

Man & Van with AFS

Not every job needs a lorry and four people. Man and van is the same service scaled down — our own driver, an hourly rate, a two-hour minimum, and the option to add a second pair of hands if the sofa needs it.

It suits single rooms, part-loads, student moves, a single piece of furniture, or a few items into a storage unit — anything smaller than a full house that still needs a proper vehicle and someone who knows how to load it.

Where we work

Every part of Tower Hamlets, E1, E2 and E1W

We cover man & van across all of Tower Hamlets: Whitechapel, Weavers, St Katharine's & Wapping, Stepney Green, Spitalfields & Banglatown and Shadwell. Jobs out to Shoreditch, Southwark, Bow and Hackney are quoted the same way.

Council rules

What the council says about moving day in Tower Hamlets

Published by the authorities themselves, with a link to each. Rules and fees change, so check the source before you rely on them.

  1. Reserving space outside the property: Tower Hamlets Council

Tower Hamlets takes suspensions through an online form and needs 7 working days' notice, with payment received by then. The standard charge is a £200 service charge plus £90 per bay per day. Residents moving house can ask for a limited suspension with no bay charge for up to 2 bays for one day, though the service charge still applies. With AFS, you apply for and pay for any suspension yourself, then send us the booking reference and bay location so we can plan the van around it.

Extra help

Deciding how much help you need

Most moves need only a vehicle and a crew sized to the home. These are the situations where adding help usually saves time or reduces risk.

  • An extra mover

Worth it when there are stairs at both ends, a long carry from where the van can stop, or a tight window between collecting your keys and handing over your old ones.

For a Luton Box Van, a third mover takes the hourly rate from £100 to £130.

  • Packing

Worth it when you have less than a week, a lot of glass, china or artwork, or little time around work.

Packing packages include the materials: £400 for a 1-bedroom home, £600 for 2 bedrooms and £1,000 for 3. If you only want the breakables done, fragile-only packing covers glass, china, artwork and mirrors.

  • Dismantling and reassembly

Worth it when a bed, wardrobe or table will not pass through a stairwell or doorway in one piece.

A single or double bed is £50 to dismantle, or £90 to dismantle and rebuild; a standard two-door wardrobe is £60, or £110 with reassembly. Every dismantling booking has a £90 minimum.

  • Pianos, antiques and artwork

Worth it when an item is heavy, valuable or awkward enough to need extra wrapping and handling.

Priced for the item, after we know what it is and where it has to go.

  • Storage

Worth it when your new home is not ready on moving day, the dates do not line up, or you are downsizing and need somewhere for what does not fit yet.

We arrange secure storage near either address. Storage for a 1-bedroom flat's contents is £250 to £350 a month, VAT included, with the first month paid upfront; larger homes are priced on volume in your quote. Moving into and out of storage is priced like any other move.

Questions

Man & Van in Tower Hamlets: common questions

Do you cover all of Tower Hamlets?
Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets, across the E1, E2 and E1W postcode districts, including Whitechapel, Weavers, St Katharine's & Wapping and Stepney Green. A move from Tower Hamlets to Shoreditch or to the other end of the UK is priced from the same rate card.
What are your prices for man & van in Tower Hamlets?
The same as everywhere we work — our rates do not change by postcode. For example, transit lwb, driver only: £60/hr (2-hour minimum (£120)). Billed for the hours worked, never below the minimum. Mileage between your two addresses and any stairs (£10 per person, per flight, per hour at that address) are added in your written quote. Your itemised written quote arrives within 24 hours.
Do I need to arrange parking for moving day in Tower Hamlets?
Tower Hamlets takes suspensions through an online form and needs 7 working days' notice, with payment received by then. You apply for and pay for any suspension yourself, and tell us the bay when you book; the council's fees and link are in the council rules section.
Is this suitable for a single item?
Yes. A single item, a part-load, or a full van run are all priced the same way — by the hour, plus mileage.
Is my load insured?
Yes. Goods in Transit and Public Liability cover are included as standard, regardless of the size of the job.
Can I book a driver only, with no additional crew?
Yes, where the load allows it. Adding movers changes the hourly rate rather than adding a separate charge.
